‘Fuel with Food Program’ aimed at eliminating mass hunger and malnutrition

A large section of the population still lies below the poverty line as a large number of people cannot afford to have four square meals a day. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Xoriant, “Fuel with food – Zeroing Hunger” was initiated on 1st September 2020 to eliminate hunger, food wastage, and malnutrition among the masses. This initiative was jointly collaborated by GetInsured in association with the NGO partner RotiBank which is a non-profit, food rescue organization. The RotiBank operates with the help of a team of in-house cooks who follow certain standard operating procedures to maintain hygiene and certain quality standards in their kitchen.

Xoriant’s CSR Initiative “Touching Lives” was initiated to make a positive impact on the masses by providing unprecedented happiness by focusing on eliminating poverty and undernourishment. This initiative also encompasses three major areas, namely :

  1. Promoting Education – focused on educating the youth of the underprivileged class.
  2. Maintaining Environmental Sustainability – this initiative focuses on encouraging employees to be vigilant about the utilization of natural resources while ensuring the preservation of the global environment.
  3. Creating Health Awareness – this initiative focuses on maintaining the physical and mental health of the employees and the members of the local communities.

The impact created in eradicating poverty and nullifying hunger

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in India adversely impacted few states like Mumbai more than any other state as a lot of migrant workers had to traverse to their hometown on foot after losing their only means of livelihood in Mumbai. Since most of them were daily wage earners and had lost their jobs, several families were sleeping hungry in their homes or stranded outside the hospitals and railway stations.

To eliminate poverty and the problem of excessive hunger, RotiBank started serving around 7,000-8,000 meals per day with the help of various sponsors like Xoriant and GetInsured. The total number of meals served by the company was recorded at 12,000 in September 2020, or 400 meals per day in Mumbai. However, this became an ongoing activity from October 2020 as Xoriant and GetInsured contributed equally to provide 600 meals per day towards this cause. RotiBank in other cities like Hyderabad, Nagpur, Coimbatore, and Chennai also aimed at uplifting the masses by eradication of hunger and poverty, in the purview of the ‘Fuel with Food program.’

RotiBank volunteers included the Samaritans, individuals, kids who could either donate food by giving the excess food from their homes to the needy or via several organizations, mess, schools, and hospitals, with whom they had a tie-up for excess food distribution. Monetary contributions and donations from several sources were instrumental in funding a bigger fleet of vehicles to handle logistics in order to free people from the suffocating grip of hunger. Tie-ups with several schools and colleges helped the volunteers to feed the masses using different technological know-how while handling the daily operations. A word of mouth and creating awareness of this initiative helped the masses to get some respite from the bitter plight of hunger.

The Fuel with Food initiative is aligned to one of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations to achieve a better and sustainable future for everyone. They have already served about 1,57,800 meals between September 2020 and May 2021 in the vicinity of  Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

The Way Forward

The year 2021 envisions a new horizon with newer resolutions of a hunger-free world. Little steps like shopping smart, tracking one’s waste, eating the leftovers, and creating awareness about the reason for excessive hunger and its means to ending it, will definitely bring about a huge change in the lives of the less privileged.

The RotiBank aims to supply 10,000 daily meals in Mumbai while increasing the nutritional value of the meals being served. Newer equipment for cooking like boilers was brought in while introducing new centers in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for eliminating hunger and malnourishment. More awareness of this initiative is planned amongst the youth and children by getting them involved in the noble cause of sharing and mitigating hunger.

Going forward, GetInsured is planning to help the Company’s communities grow in their regional offices in Atlanta and Dallas. Very soon, this initiative will be successful in eliminating hunger and malnutrition from India in the post COVID era.
