A step towards nurturing the environment for Inclusive growth !

Capgemini and WWF India team at work

Capgemini firmly believes that nurturing the environment for inclusive development should be the basic principle to operate on. As a responsible corporate, they acknowledge their role and commit their skills and resources for sustainable development. This includes sharing responsibility towards protecting the environment and creating solutions to environmental problems through long term and sustainable action.

Capgemini focuses on efficiently handling waste, creating a digital platform for building solidarity and promoting community action for harmonizing environment factors.

Mr. Ashwin Yardi, COO, Capgemini – India says, ‘We build our programs under 3E’s – Education, Employability, and Environment’.

One Planet Academy

One Planet Academy - a digital platform to increase the outreach of environmental education through technology

To increase the outreach of environmental education through technology, the idea of a digital portal ‘One Planet Academy’ was conceived. After two years of consultations, workshops, and research, the platform was born. It is a joint venture of WWF-India and Capgemini, India and an outcome of the shared values and beliefs for the need for environmental education in the country.

Ms. Radhika Suri, Director, Environment Education- WWF-India states, ‘We are causing a huge impact on the Environment and there’s a need for action. Our education system has always recognized this but they have done it through textbooks, at WWF- India, we need a different approach to reach every child in the country’.

One Planet Academy, the online environment education portal reaches out to the teachers and the students. It is very engaging and interactive; it speaks the language of a 21st-century child. The portal has games, comics, short stories, films, and everything has a call to action.

The project aims at raising awareness amongst the school children and the teachers.

The portal also has a school program in it. Schools can register and participate in ‘Call to Green Action’ program. It urges students, teachers, and schools to take action. There are tools embedded in the portal to measure how students perform. The call to green action program shows how many schools are actually turning green.

Waste Management

Waste Management initiative in association with Saahas in Bangalore.

In unique Public-Private partnerships, Capgemini collaborated with Saahas Waste Management Pvt Ltd and launched Waste Management Centre in Whitefield, Bengaluru to tackle one of the most challenging problems for most of the urban areas in India. Launched as a part of Capgemini’s CSR efforts towards the environment, the primary aim of this waste management plant is to demonstrate the concepts of Decentralised Waste Management driven by Segregation at Source. These decentralized waste management units process wet/biodegradable waste into compost or generate biogas and dry/recyclable waste will be sorted and sent for recycling.

The plant benefits thousands of residents across Bangalore.

‘The communities are well are well aware of the problems of dumping of waste’, says Ms. Wilma Rodrigues, Founder and CEO, Sahaas Waste Management Pvt Ltd.

Commenting on the partnership, Ms. Divya Tiwari- CEO, Saahas says, ’The centre proves to be very useful for engaging the community around; to show, once segregated how well the waste can be managed instead of just being dumped. It is good to work with a partner who comes in with a strategic focus and have long term commitment to certain issues. They are also focused on capacity building of NGOs, so they have been helping us to improve compliances, processes; in this regards it’s great to engage with Capgemini.

The initiative has impacted the lives of 528000 people by waste management and Digital Resource Centre on Environment.

Mr. Yardi concludes by stating, ‘We have ambition, that as Capgemini by leveraging our capabilities, we want to impact a million lives by 2020’.
