In Bengaluru, marginalized women struggle a lot with economic hardships as well as opportunities for employment in their own place. The lack of sustainable livelihood opportunities, coupled with society, makes it complex to support one's family among these women from Bengaluru.

Moreover, the city’s growing requirement for clean, greener transportation demonstrates the urgent need for eco-friendly mobility-based solutions.

To address this issue, United Way Bengaluru, with financial support from GE Aerospace in India, launched an initiative to empower underserved women via sustained livelihoods. As a significant part of this program, six e-autos, each equipped with a smartphone, were distributed to women from vulnerable communities.

With continuous support from the Bengaluru City Commissioner’s Office via the Parihar initiative, this initiative offers women training to operate these e-autos and partners up with ride-hailing services, making sure to provide a stable source of income.

This program helped women achieve financial independence and contributes to Bengaluru’s environmental sustainability. The e-autos ultimately minimize air pollution, lower carbon emissions, and foster quieter urban transport.

Key Initiatives

United Way Bengaluru, in partnership with GE Aerospace India, has launched an innovative initiative designed to empower underserved women via the distribution of around six e-autos, each equipped with a smartphone for hassle-free ride management.

This program is supported by the Bengaluru City Commissioner’s Office under the Parihar initiative, which strives to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for women from vulnerable communities.

By offering extensive training and resources, this program allows women to operate electric autos and collaborate with cab aggregators to promote financial independence and improve their quality of life significantly.

In addition to fostering financial empowerment, this program is focused on promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions that contribute to minimizing air pollution and carbon emissions in Bengaluru. Rajesh Krishnan, CEO of United Way Bengaluru, expressed optimism regarding the program’s potential to assist women to gain control over their lives and earn significant income.

Sanjeev Jha from GE Aerospace highlighted the significance of the community-based initiatives focused on uplifting women and fostering dignity in their work. This collaboration showcased how public-private partnerships drive social change and environmental sustainability in urban settings.

Implementation and Services

The recent initiative of United Way Bengaluru, supported by GE Aerospace, is one of the significant steps towards empowering marginalized women in Bengaluru city. With the distribution of six electric autos, each provided smartphones. This program further aims to cultivate sustainable livelihood opportunities for women from vulnerable communities.

This program fostered economic independence for women and promoted eco-friendly transportation in Bengaluru, ultimately minimizing air pollution and carbon emissions in the city.

The electric autos are specifically designed to provide ride management through seamless aggregator applications to make sure women can operate vehicles while partnering up with established car services effectively.

Training is another essential aspect of this initiative, as marginalized women are equipped with adequate skills to navigate ride-hailing. Supported by Parihar and Bengaluru City Commissioner’s Office, this program emphasizes skill development with advanced technology integration.

Rajesh Krishan, CEO of United Way Bengaluru, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, as it empowers women to take charge of their lives and earn a dignified livelihood. This partnership further highlighted the strength of public-private collaboration in driving social change and promoting environmental sustainability.

The impact of this initiative goes beyond just individual empowerment, it is a commitment to cultivating a greener urban environment. As Police Commissioner Shri B. Dayanda highlighted, collaborative efforts can address social/environmental challenges.

By integrating women’s empowerment with eco-friendly mobility solutions, United Way Bengaluru and GE Aerospace are focused on contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable future for Bengaluru city.

Impact Created

Initiative launched by United Way Bengaluru in partnership with GE Aerospace has made a transformative step for empowering underserved women in Bengaluru. By distributing six e-autos provided with smartphones, this initiative facilitates mobility solutions and promotes sustainable livelihoods for women from vulnerable communities.

Each electric auto served as a means for women to engage with ride-hailing services, however, facilitating their journey towards financial independence. This initiative was supported by the Parihar program from the Bengaluru City Commissioner’s Office, which emphasized skill development and operational training for beneficiaries.

The impact of this initiative contributes to environmental sustainability, as e-autos are designed to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions in Bengaluru city. Rajesh Krishnan, CEO of United Way Bengaluru, stated that this initiative empowers women to take charge of their lives and promotes a clean environment in the urban landscape.

This collaboration showcases the strength of public-private collaborations in driving social change, as emphasized by Bengaluru’s Police Commissioner, Shri B. Dayananda, who noted that these initiatives play a crucial role in building a better and inclusive future.

Overall, this program enhances the livelihoods of marginalized women and aligns with the wider sustainability objectives of Bengaluru city. It highlighted how innovative solutions can address social inequalities and environmental issues by setting a standard example for future community-driven initiatives in urban settings.

Way Forward

As we look ahead, the electric auto initiative launched by United Way Bengaluru and GE Aerospace serves as a robust model for future programs focused on empowering marginalized women. By offering vehicles, adequate training, and technology, this program serves as strong groundwork for sustainable livelihoods that uplift overall communities.

The success of this initiative inspires similar partnerships in the future across varied sectors, which will encourage businesses and local government to collaborate on innovative solutions that address social inequalities while fostering economic growth significantly.

Moreover, focus on eco-friendly transportation effectively aligns with the international sustainability goals, which makes it an essential aspect for urban development strategies.

As Bengaluru continues to address significant issues such as air pollution, traffic congestion, and more, initiatives such as the e-auto program can play an essential role in promoting cleaner, greener urban mobility.

Looking forward, there is an opportunity to expand this initiative by integrating a larger number of women into the workforce, improving their skills, and exploring a range of new avenues for sustainable transport solutions. This will likely enhance the quality of life for underserved communities and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive city for all residents.
