Their shared goal is to revolutionize the infrastructure of government higher secondary schools in Kannagi Nagar, Chennai, making education accessible to every child. This project has given schools in Kannagi Nagar a transformative facelift by addressing various aspects of their infrastructure. Accolite and Bounteous have collectively worked to upgrade classrooms, equip students with state-of-the-art science and computer labs, and refurbish the library. Kannagi Nagar School Development: Infrastructure and More

Kannagi Nagar is one of India’s largest resettlement sites, wherein around 80,000 people reside, and many were displaced from their original homes due to the unfortunate tragic 2004 tsunami. As per a few studies, only 10% of children in Kannagi Nagar have access to educational facilities; that’s the sad reality! 

Since around 2,000 school seats are available for around 20,000 school-going children, they tend to face a dropout rate of 35% among 15-18-year-old children. Around 42% of students must commute at least 20 km to access education from other schools, making it difficult and risky to travel daily. 

Before the intervention of this initiative, GHSS Kannagi Nagar faced numerous challenges. The school, established in 2004, struggled with poor infrastructure, including overcrowded classrooms, insufficient furniture, poor electrical facilities, and low safety. These were alarming concerns for students. Recognizing the urgent need, Bounteous x Accolite partnered with Ladies Circle India Trust to begin the journey of renovating the school and transforming the overall school environment seamlessly. 

Additionally, the government school in Kannagi Nagar, Chennai, which caters to more than 1,500 students from 6 to 12 grades, underwent an infrastructure upgrade to facilitate an improved learning experience for students. The key improvements in the infrastructure include:

Moreover, this project offered students clean drinking water by installing water purifiers, and the school's library was upgraded with a wide array of books and resources to support students in exploring varied topics. Also, the partnership between Accolite x Bounteous improved sports facilities to promote physical activity and students' overall well-being. 

Furthermore, this initiative is expected to continue with efforts to provide thorough career guidance, extracurricular activities, and more to ensure students leverage the right education, facilities, and guidance to excel in their careers. This collaboration is committed to empowering students and enhancing the school’s infrastructure to positively impact the lives of more than 1,500 students in Chennai. 

Seeing the infrastructural upgrade, Mrs Andeshwari, the school’s HeadMistress, stated, “The renovation has given us a sense of pride and motivation among students and teachers. These improvements have made the school a safe space, more functional, and brought a sense of discipline and belonging in our students' minds.” 

Not just that, upgrades in school have a profound impact among students as well. As one of the students, J. Jayshri - a student from 9th grade, stated, “ When I joined the school, infrastructure was in a poor state. When it rained, water leaked through the roof, and during summer, it was unbearable for us to sit in classrooms as there were no fans. Now, with new benches, well-painted classrooms, and a positive environment, we are excited to come to school and learn new things every day”.
