In 2013, Uttarakhand experienced one of the worst natural disasters in Indian history—the catastrophic floods that claimed many lives and caused widespread devastation. Alice Sharma, then just 16 years old, found herself trapped in Kedarnath, the epicenter of the disaster, during a pilgrimage tour with her friends and family. Witnessing the horrifying scenes of death and abandonment, Alice's perspective on life was forever transformed. Grateful to have survived, she made a solemn vow to dedicate herself to uplifting the underprivileged and making a meaningful impact.

In the winter of 2018, Alice established the Vastra Aur Zindagiyan Foundation, driven by her newfound sense of purpose. With a core team of 10 people and the support of nearly 60 volunteers, the organization began its mission to help the vulnerable communities in her hometown of Delhi. Their initial focus was providing essential supplies such as food, clothes, and blankets to the homeless individuals living on the streets. Through the generosity of the community and the power of crowdfunding, the organization managed to run a center near Chawri Bazaar in Delhi.

Alice's journey from a potential law student to a celebrated author and social entrepreneur is a testament to her resilience and unwavering commitment. She discovered her passion for writing during a year-long break she had to take due to health concerns. Her blogs gained significant popularity, leading her to publish her debut novel, which became a bestseller and earned her national recognition. Alice Sharma has made a significant impact on society through her tireless efforts and the Vastra Aur Zindagiyan Foundation. Her organization has provided essential supplies, including food, clothes, and blankets, to the homeless population in Delhi, reaching thousands of individuals in need.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic posed a significant threat to their fundraising efforts as people were struggling to meet their own basic needs. Despite these obstacles, they were able to extend their reach and help more than 15,000 people across slum areas in Delhi, providing much-needed support during these trying times.

Throughout her journey, Alice encountered and tackled various societal issues head-on. She noticed the stigma and discrimination surrounding menstruation, particularly in slum areas, where women were hesitant to accept sanitary napkins. 

Determined to break the taboo and educate these women about proper hygiene practices, Alice and her team tirelessly worked to raise awareness and convince around 80% of them to embrace healthier practices. This achievement not only improves the physical well-being of these women but also empowers them by challenging long-held taboos and promoting gender equality.

As a young woman entering the social sector, she faced gender bias and the perception that women should step back from fieldwork. Alice encountered situations where her expertise and skills were undermined simply because of her gender. She experienced setbacks, but she refused to let these obstacles define her.

By establishing a center near Chawri Bazaar and providing ongoing support to vulnerable communities, she has created a sense of hope and belonging among those who often feel neglected and marginalized. Through her work, she has restored dignity to individuals who were previously living on the streets or in impoverished conditions.

In recognition of her accomplishments, Alice has gained national recognition as an author and social entrepreneur. Her debut novel became a bestseller, further amplifying her voice and enabling her to reach a wider audience with her message of compassion and social justice.
