Lighting Up Lives with Solar Energy – Green India Initiative Private Limited

Given the imminent climate crisis we all face today, it is imperative that we explore and leverage alternative sources of energy to ease the burden on the current mainstream energy sources. Solar energy is one such resource that can be tapped into to provide a clean, renewable, and sustainable source of energy. With a major population of India still living in remote areas with limited infrastructure, harvesting solar energy could also be envisioned as a potential solution to remedy the lack of electricity in such areas.

To achieve two goals with a single effort, Green India Initiative Private Limited (GIIPL) has been working to light up the lives of rural India through solar energy. GIIPL’s vision is to channelize investment towards the advancement of the country and environmental up-gradation through renewable energy. GIIPL deals in renewable energy-based products and project execution. They aspire to make an impact by serving as a reliable sustainability partner assuring valued efficient energy solutions driven by passion and excellence in service.

Sachin Shigwan, Managing Director & Founder, Green India Initiative, aka the Solar Man, founded the company in 2014 with the aim to bring electricity to rural households of India by serving as a bridge between beneficiaries and NGOs as a project implementation partner in rural areas, and as consultants providing expertise in areas of ideation, value-added benefits, engineering, procurement, and commissioning of solar energy projects in remote rural areas. Solar streetlights installation, solar cooker for mid-day meals, solar PV Off-grid systems, solar enabled E-learning kits, electrification of anganwadis and rural schools, water pump, and dual pump system are some of the services that GIIPL has implemented in the rural geographies of the country.

Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd has joined hands with GIIPL to implement their CSR intervention ‘Sudha’, to support infrastructure development in three villages (16 hamlets) of Mulshi, Roha, and Mahad, Maharashtra. The intervention aims to install solar streetlights with inbuilt batteries to resolve the issue of darkness in the streets of the villages during the evening time. Towards this, GIIPL has enabled support of resource, commissioning, and installation of more than 300 solar streetlights across 30 villages, reaching out to 4500 beneficiaries.

“When Sudarshan Chemical’s CSR Committee decided to implement an innovative & sustainable project ‘Sudha’ in the nearby communities, we came across Green India Initiative’s work towards rural development through Solar Energy. It was impressive to know that they had already worked in more than 200 villages and suggested installing solar streetlights for a greater impact on villagers’ life. So far, we have powered more than 30 small hamlets from about seven Gram Panchayats with more than 300 solar streetlights. The quality of product and professional services rendered by Team Green India Initiative has been the key to the project’s success,” said Madhuri Sanas, DGM- CSR, Administration, Liasioning, Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd.

GIIPL’s commitment and efforts have been instrumental in reducing the carbon footprint in the areas by approximately 16.8 tons so far and target further reduction of carbon emissions in the coming years. Moreover, the streetlights adding more visibility at night have enabled fear-free transportation and safety at night, extended children’s playtime in the evening, and the workers are also able to work late in the evening.

“With a bright solar streetlight, our village looks like it is celebrating a festival. Children can play or study under the solar streetlight and villagers can do their household chores in the evening time. Everyone from our village is now happy and giving blessings to Sudarshan Chemicals for their wonderful work with help of Green India Initiative,” said Vagoba, Sarpanch Eshani Kamble Gram Panchayat, Mahad.

To ensure sustainability and ownership of the project, the village citizens are trained on the operation of the systems with training videos and documentation. Team Green India Initiative also forms the ‘Solar Friends Group’ and provides the citizens with the training skills and knowledge required to maintain the assets in the long run.

“While implementing the Vision and Mission of Green India Initiative, we always aim for partnerships with like-minded CSR interventions, such as with Sudarshan Chemicals Industries Ltd. With a common agenda of lighting up the rural paths of the villages situated near Sudarshan factories from Mulshi, Roha, and Mahad, we were able to attain the desired outcome and impact on the life of rural communities,” said Sachin Shigwan, Managing Director & Founder, Green India Initiative.

Paving the road ahead, GIIPL is striving to electrify 1000 villages and facilitate energy access to more than one million rural citizens by 2025.
