Texas Instruments India CSR Initiative Supports 40,000 Students with Mid-Day Meals

Across India, millions of children attend school every day on an empty stomach. For many, the mid-day meal provided in government schools is the only nutritious food they receive, and its absence can result in lower attendance, poor concentration, and declining health. Malnutrition continues to be a barrier to both education and overall development, especially in states with high poverty rates.

As part of its CSR initiative, Texas Instruments (TI) India has partnered with The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF), one of the world’s largest not-for-profit organisations in the school meal space, to address the urgent issue of classroom hunger and make a lasting difference.

Their collaboration, which has spanned over a decade, demonstrates how strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives can create meaningful impact at scale. Most recently, the partnership marked TI’s 40th year of innovation in India and 12 years of collaboration with TAPF by sponsoring 40,000 student meals, while also reaffirming its long-term commitment to child welfare, education, and nutrition.

Strengthening Nutrition and Education

Nutrition and education are deeply interlinked, and this initiative directly addresses that connection. For school-going children, access to wholesome meals is not only about physical health but also about academic performance and future opportunities. By sponsoring 40,000 meals, the programme ensures that students are encouraged to attend school consistently, concentrate better in classrooms, and achieve improved learning outcomes.

The initiative builds on years of experience in operating large-scale mid-day meal programmes. TAPF’s centralised kitchens have been designed to cater to thousands of students every day while maintaining strict standards of quality and hygiene.

TI’s support enables the expansion of this reach, ensuring that the benefits extend to children across Karnataka and beyond. The partnership underscores the idea that educational success is not only dependent on books and teachers but also on ensuring children do not study on an empty stomach.

The sponsorship of meals in honour of TI’s 40-year milestone in India reflects a symbolic yet practical gesture of giving back to the community. It highlights how corporates can align their celebrations and milestones with initiatives that generate social good, creating a cycle where community development and corporate growth go hand in hand.

Infrastructure and Operational Support

While meal sponsorship addresses immediate needs, long-term impact requires robust infrastructure and efficient delivery systems. Since 2014, TI India has played a critical role in strengthening the backbone of TAPF’s operations by contributing to capital infrastructure. This includes funding nine food delivery vehicles, providing kitchen vessels, and supplying essential cooking equipment.

These assets have greatly enhanced the efficiency and scale of TAPF’s kitchens. Delivery vehicles, for instance, enable the timely transportation of freshly prepared meals to schools, often across long distances.

The availability of high-quality vessels and kitchen tools improves hygiene, safety, and consistency in large-scale cooking processes. In the financial year 2023–24 alone, TI’s contribution of two new food distribution vehicles and kitchen vessels at the VK Hill kitchen helped reach 8,000 students daily.

Such investments highlight the importance of corporate partners not just contributing financially but also enabling operational improvements that ensure sustainability. By focusing on both the immediate need for meals and the long-term infrastructure required to prepare and deliver them, the collaboration reflects a holistic approach to solving classroom hunger.

Community Engagement and Collaboration

A key strength of this partnership lies in its emphasis on community engagement. TI leaders have actively participated in service activities alongside TAPF, highlighting the importance of hands-on involvement.

As part of the recent initiative, TI representatives toured TAPF’s centralised kitchen facilities, witnessing the scale and efficiency of automated processes that prepare thousands of meals each day.

This direct engagement not only deepens the corporate team’s understanding of ground realities but also builds stronger connections with the cause. By visiting government schools, recognising the achievements of students and teachers, and personally serving mid-day meals, TI leaders reinforced the message that CSR is not just about financial contributions but about shared responsibility and active participation.

Community-centric activities, such as unveiling a symbolic “Thank You TI” wall at a local school, demonstrate how partnerships can foster a culture of gratitude and inclusivity.

These initiatives bridge the gap between corporates and beneficiaries, creating a sense of trust and collaboration. They also showcase how corporates can integrate community engagement into their culture, ensuring that employees feel invested in social impact efforts.

Impact Created

Over the years, the collaboration between The Akshaya Patra Foundation and Texas Instruments India has generated significant outcomes that have touched the lives of thousands of children. The measurable impact includes:

●       40,000 meals sponsored in the latest initiative, directly supporting children in local schools.

●       3.75 lakh children benefited across Karnataka since 2014 through TI India’s contributions.

●       9 food delivery vehicles funded, ensuring reliable and efficient last-mile connectivity for meal distribution.

●       Kitchen infrastructure strengthened, with vessels and equipment that maintain high standards of safety, hygiene, and efficiency.

●       8,000 students were supported daily in FY 2023–24 through the VK Hill kitchen with the help of TI’s newly funded distribution vehicles and vessels.

These numbers represent more than just statistics. They translate into healthier children, improved attendance, enhanced classroom participation, and the long-term promise of better educational outcomes. By addressing both hunger and education simultaneously, the initiative provides children with a stronger foundation for the future.

Way Forward

The journey to eliminate classroom hunger in India is far from complete. Millions of children still depend on mid-day meals as their primary source of nutrition, and gaps in infrastructure, resources, and funding remain. However, the partnership between The Akshaya Patra Foundation and Texas Instruments India offers a strong model of how corporates and non-profits can collaborate to create scalable and sustainable impact.

Looking ahead, the two organisations are committed to expanding the reach of the programme and enhancing its efficiency. Future plans include investing in more advanced kitchen infrastructure, adopting innovative technologies for food preparation and distribution, and ensuring that delivery systems keep pace with the growing demand. There is also scope for expanding beyond Karnataka, replicating the success of this model in other states where the need for mid-day meals is equally urgent.

Equally important is the focus on continuous community engagement. By encouraging employee participation in service days and school visits, TI India reinforces the importance of collective responsibility. Such initiatives not only benefit the children but also cultivate a sense of empathy and purpose among employees, strengthening the fabric of corporate citizenship.

Ultimately, the collaboration reflects a broader vision: building stronger communities by investing in education, health, and nutrition. By continuing to scale their partnership, TAPF and TI India are paving the way for a future where no child is forced to choose between hunger and education.

Their work demonstrates that when corporations and non-profits join forces, the impact extends far beyond immediate beneficiaries; it shapes healthier, better-educated generations who can contribute meaningfully to society.
