Project Shakti is a company’s initiative that aims to financially empower and provide livelihood opportunities to women in rural India. The Shakti Entrepreneurs are given training for familiarisation with the Company’s products and basic tenets of distribution management. HUL has a team of Rural Sales Promoters (RSPs) who coach and help Shakti Entrepreneurs in managing their business. Across 18 States, Project Shakti has nearly 1,36,000 Shakti Entrepreneurs whom they call ‘Shakti Ammas’. This programme has helped these women gain selling skills, become self-confident, improve their self-esteem and learn communication skills. Most importantly, our interventions have helped in building and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset amongst Shakti Entrepreneurs.

HZL's flagship project “Sakhi” is geared towards mobilizing rural women into Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and developing their capacities in the areas of leadership, skill development, and entrepreneurship. Under this project, there are 2,248 SHGs, 207 Village level Organizations, and 07 Federations with a membership of 27,517 women. Leadership skills, imparted to more than 500 women through various training and capacity-building programs, have resulted in grooming them as future leaders.

Brief about the Company: Hindustan Zinc Limited was incorporated from the erstwhile Metal Corporation of India on 10 January 1966 as a Public Sector Undertaking. The Company contributed to CSR by contributing towards Women's Empowerment. This initiative provided a range of gainful employment opportunities to over 77,000 poor women cumulatively, supported with capacity building, and provided financial assistance by way of loans and grants. Included in the total are 29,184 ultra-poor women in your Company’s core catchments who have access to sustainable sources of income through on-farm and off-farm livelihood opportunities. The financial literacy and inclusion project, in partnership with Madhya Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (MPSRLM) and CRISIL Foundation, was operational in 26 districts during the year. 1,062 Super Trainers were trained directly and they, in turn, trained 2,824 Master Trainers who cascaded the training to over 74,000 self-help groups and more than 7.60 lakh women cumulatively across 4,384 villages. Over 4.18 lakh women of those trained have been linked to government social security schemes.

Set up in Ambavane, Velhe, Maharashtra in 2014, the Jeewan Jyoti Women Empowerment Programme has, over the years, empowered women to become agents of change. The comprehensive ecosystem that the programme provides ensures that women are supported during their skilling courses through additional facilities. These women are guided on personality development and career growth that helps them emerge more confident of their abilities and potential with a clear direction on the way forward. This has created a new generation of women in rural Maharashtra who want to make their dreams a reality. There are now, not just more women employed, but an increasing number of women entrepreneurs. At the production unit set up at Velhe in FY20 women are trained on advanced handicrafts as well as quality, supply chain management, packaging, and other processes. To further strengthen this holistic ecosystem, STL launched the Jeewan Jyoti application in FY21. The Company further extended the programme to urban youth in Aurangabad. Here, apart from equipping them with industry-relevant skills, they are also guaranteed employment on successful completion of the course.

Salon-i is a vocational training programme for women. It is designed entirely in-house to train young women in basic skills of beauty, skin, hair care, and mehndi application. In addition, life skills and entrepreneurship development modules enable women to take up jobs or pursue self-employment depending on their unique skillsets and circumstances. Though Salon-i's employability goal is small compared to the country's overall need, the programme is unique as it specifically aims at employability, entrepreneurship, and empowerment of women. Since the fiscal year 2012-13, we have trained over 2,84,000 women. This includes the young women trained by our Beautypreneurs. A third-party impact assessment of Salon-i showed a threefold increase in our trainees participating in paid work - from 14 per cent to 45 per cent, of which 78 per cent were first-time entrants in the workforce.

The development of any nation can be seen just by seeing how empowered women are in that nation. CCL products want to empower women and stand with them in facing all the obstacles in life strongly. Over the years we have done our efforts in the areas of girl child education, provision of safe shelters, making them skilled and economically self-sufficient. With the help of “Abhaya Foundation”, CCL has been able to provide courses like tailoring, beautician, jute bag making, fashion designing, and jewellery making across 70 villages nearby Hyderabad which has empowered more than 6,000 women to date to become financially stable and independent. CCL has also provided Sewing Machines and set up jute factories as part of a self-sustenance program for rural women.

The Company helped to form, nurture and develop 130 new self-help groups (SHGs) - Mahila Mandals in Bhavnagar, Talaja, and Amreli Districts. More than 1,500 additional women became members of these SHGs. With this, the total number of SHGs has reached 570 with 6,400 members. Three additional village organisations were created during the year to support the SHGs. The Company has also collaborated in Public-Private Partnership with the Government of Gujarat, Rurban Mission for the development of Infrastructure for SHGs to undertake livelihood generation activities in Kikariya and Mota Khutavda villages. During the year, SHGs sponsored by us at Biladi village started making sanitizers and a variety of aloe vera products. Other new SHG units initiated by us started making khakhra, pickles, cotton masks at Khadasali, Manar, and Bagdana villages. A new Logistics Warehouse has been made operational in Mahuva to support and take care of the needs of SHG businesses. Procurement, logistics, and marketing support were provided to various SHG businesses making different products.

At Grasim, it is believed that real social progress is closely tied with meaningful women's empowerment. With a total investment of ₹4.8 lakh, the stitching centres run by the SHGs have already earned ₹7.45 lakh in profits. Each woman, associated with this initiative, earns ₹3,000- ₹4,000 per month.

Empower-Her is an initiative for financial inclusion and independence of women at model villages Under this program, we launched the initiative “Udgam” at PhaltanMegasite in 2017 which aims at creating awareness about Sanitary Hygiene, usage of sanitary napkins, and enabling Entrepreneurship by setting sanitary pads production machine to produce eco-friendly napkin at a lower cost. Manufacturing and marketing of the product are done by women self-help groups with the support of Anganwadi and Asha workers. The project provides additional income beyond agriculture to women in villages. This program was quite successful and gained good response from villagers at the company’s three sites in Phaltan, Jamshedpur, and Dewas. Post reviewing the success and impact, this project was replicated at 2 more locations in partnership with Cummins Suppliers in Maharashtra. With the best community impact and high replication potentials, Cummins plan to replicate “Udgam” program in partnership with stakeholder/ supplier/s at various locations in India. Empower HER initiative has so far benefitted more than 1138 women with additional income opportunities to support their families.
