Waters, Sanitation and Hygiene, popularly known as WASH is an important factor for growth of a nation that addresses key issues like growing water scarcity, lack of proper hygiene and sanitation facilities. While a lot of countries are focusing on WASH related activities to promote sustainability, India is also carrying out various programs to mitigate the challenges and promote better WASH related practices.  Below are top 10 Waste Management projects through CSR in India based on the CSR funds allocation of each company in the Financial Year 2019-20

ITC Limited set foot to promote a hygienic environment through prevention of open defecation and reduce incidence of waterborne diseases. In the year 2019-20, to achieve the objective of zero open defecation, 1,597 (cumulative 37,513) Individual Household Toilets (IHHTs) were constructed in 28 districts of 15 States in collaboration with the respective State Governments/District Sanitation Departments. In addition, 19 community toilets were constructed/renovated in Bihar, West Bengal in the year (cumulative 81). Along with sanitation infrastructure development, equal focus was given to awareness campaigns to create demand and drive behavioural change. The Swasth India Mission covered nearly 14.86 lakh children from around 5,124 schools in 49 cities in 11 States during the year. Additionally, access to handwashing was enabled through the unique ‘ID Guard’ initiative to all children in these 5,124 schools. Since the outbreak of Covid 19, “Swasth India Mission” has been increasing awareness on the necessary precautionary measures to reduce the spread of Coronavirus.  To make hygienic and healthy water available to local communities, 15 new Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification plants (cumulative 142) were set up in Andhra Pradesh in 2019-20. The company has also contributed to the Mother and Child Health initiative aimed to improve the health-nutrition status of women.

‘Swachh Aadat, Swachh Bharat’ (SASB) programme is in line with the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) to promote good health and hygiene practices. In 2019, the programme continued to promote good health and hygiene practices by stressing the need to adopt three clean habits (‘Swachh Aadat’) of washing hands five times a day, using a toilet for defecation and adopting safe drinking water practices.   part of SASB, Swachhata Doot (Messenger of Cleanliness) is a volunteering programme that enables any person to become a change agent in his / her community. More than 4,000 of the Company’s employees across their 25 factories in India have embraced a new role as agents of change (Swachhata Doot). They educate and motivate their communities to adopt better Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) habits. Since its inception in 2015, the Programme has reached out to 21 million people.

3. Contribution towards providing quality water and sanitation activities

Maruti Suzuki contributed towards the holistic development of villages in the area of water and sanitation by providing drinking water ATMs, household toilets, water supply infrastructure, sewer lines, rain water harvesting system, and solid waste collection and management system; Creation of community assets. The Company has set up 24 water ATMs in 23 villages to supply drinking water to community members at an affordable price. Over 24 million litre of drinking water has been provided since commencement of the project. The water ATMs are self-sustainable as the operations and maintenance costs are met with user-fees. Around 20 kilometres of water pipeline has been laid and overhead water tanks have been constructed to improve the potable water supply infrastructure. In 2019-20, the Company has constructed 4,455 individual household toilets to help villages achieve open-defecation-free status and laid around 56 km of sewer line, cumulatively improving the quality of lives in 24 villages. 4.  Contribution to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Name of the Company:  Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)
Location: Pan India

The corporation has contributed towards the national cause of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by developing sanitation infrastructure and sensitizing communities. The employees and various stakeholders have participated in the mass-movement on cleanliness and hygiene and have undertaken more than 1,00,000 activities with direct and indirect participation. During observance of Swachhta Pakhwada and Swachhta Hi Sewa campaigns, more than 5,00,000 people from various parts of the Country were sensitized about importance of maintaining personal hygiene and cleanliness. Plastic Free City/ Village Campaigns were conducted in various parts of the Country for reducing single use plastic. A special drive for ‘Plastic-Free Ranchi’ was carried out with participation of more than 3,00,000 school students in Jharkhand. More than 1,000 toilets were constructed / upgraded in schools, hospitals and communities across India for efficient usage.

5. Pre-Fab Toilets in Railway Stations

In response to request of GoI, Ministry of Railways aiming improvement of sanitation measures in circulating areas of railway stations for passengers as well as commuters, vendors and nearby population, a project for installation of Pre-fabricated toilets in circulation areas of 200 railway stations of Jharkhand was approved by Board. MoU among CCL, RITES and SER was signed on 01.10.2019 [Duration: 1 year]. Each toilet block comprises toilets for 3 male, 3 female, 01 for differently-abled user, 01 sanitary napkin vending machine with incinerator and 01 condom vending machine. Upon completion, the asset shall be handed over to concerned Zonal railways, who shall be responsible for arranging Operation and maintenance of the toilets including water supply and electricity etc.

6.  Sanitation Programme

The company is actively implementing an ambitious School Sanitation program named Shriram Swachhagraha. Major thrust of the program is at Kota, Rajasthan where it aims to renovate school toilets across the district and usher behavior change around sanitation. Implementation of the project is completed this year in 159 Schools of Itawa & Sangod Block, benefiting nearly 40K school children. The program also works to ensure that the Schools own and sustain the infrastructure by adopting processes on Operations & Maintenance. The company is also working around Sanitation Behavior Change in these schools.

7.  Satya Bharti Abhiyan & Project FLOW

Bharti Infratel through Bharti Foundation’s Satya Bharti Abhiyan launched its operation with the adoption of Punjab’s second largest and most populous district, Ludhiana, and in less than two years enabled Ludhiana rural to achieve self-declared Open Defecation Free status. The program spread its footprint to urban Ludhiana in October 2016 and thereafter, to rural Amritsar in Sept 2017, in collaboration with the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation, Government of Punjab. The Abhiyan not only contributed to the infrastructure required to implement the initiative, it also encouraged a much-needed behavioral change towards health and wellness through its carefully structured campaigns. It is likely to improve the hygiene conditions for all residents, especially that of vulnerable populations, reducing chances of illness due to lack of proper sanitation facilities The Abhiyan simultaneously focuses on provision of toilets and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) to foster behavioral changes towards consistent usage and maintenance of toilets. 8. Swachh Ghar Mission

9.  Promoting sanitation and making available safe drinking water

Swachh Iconic Place, Somnath Temple under Swachh Bharat Mission: The project is under implementation since the year 2017. It supplements the Government of India’s initiative to enhance cleanliness across India’s rich heritage sites. During the reporting year the focus was on to raise awareness on water and sanitation using IEC materials, creating greenery around Temple complex, water and sanitation facilities in and around Temple including public places in Somnath etc. The project is under implementation from last two years and supplements the Government of India’s initiative to enhance cleanliness across India’s rich heritage sites. During the reporting year various activities were undertaken with the objective to achieve a distinctly higher level of sanitation/ cleanliness at Shree Somnath Temple and on its peripheries and in the approach areas by construction of e-Toilets, deployment of heavy duty road sweeper machine, sewerage cleaning machine, beach cleaning machine, installation of LED display boards for displaying information to create awareness about cleanliness amongst visitors, beautification in and around nearby temples by plantation and gardening work, deployment of computer education bus “School on Wheels” to facilitate training to children and women on digital literacy and educate through health and hygiene programs to locals and nearby villages. The initiative was implemented by the in-house CSR Team in co-ordination with the Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board, Somnath Veraval Nagarpalika and Managing Committees of iconic sites. 10. Participating in National cleanliness campaign under Swachh Bharat Mission

Under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and different Swachhta Pakhwadas scheduled by GoI, massive public awareness campaign on hygiene & sanitation had been done within THDCIL offices and Colonies at various locations, Schools, Hospitals, work places, streets, roads, markets, railway stations, bus stations, bank area of holy River Ganga, parks and other public places. As per need, cleaning was done in local areas and dustbins were provided at different locations in consultation with Nagar Nigam Rishikesh, Nagar Palika Parishad, Tehri and Nagar Panchayat Muni ki Reti. THDC also adopted 3 localities for cleanliness near THDC Corporate Office, Rishikesh - i. Pragati Vihar , ii. Nehru Gram, iii. Indra Nagar along with 4 Km Stretch of Bypass Road, Rishikesh (Natraj Chowk to Mansa Devi Gram). THDC has also adopted 4 schools in Rishikesh for cleanliness i.e. Govt. Primary School, Mansadevi gram, ii. Govt. Primary & Upper Schools, Bapugram iii. Govt. Primary School, Bibiwala& iv. Govt. Primary School, Indra Nagar. In addition to above, tipper, water cooler, water filter, RO, sanitary napkin vending machines and dustbins were also distributed to various beneficiaries and institutions. To check open defecation and provide better sanitation facilities, toilets were repaired and Rs. 10 lakh were released for construction of 10 community toilets.
