  • Context

ASER has come out with a shocking report which has been endorsed by UNICEF that in India that more than half of children and adolescents nationwide are not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics. Refocused efforts are needed to improve the quality of education.

Context of the locality
Krishna Raja Puram or K R Puram is one of the main market areas in the city. It is located 15 kilometres from Bangalore City Railway Station on Old Madras Road (NH-4).

Hub of Migrants
KR Puram is a locality filled with migrants. The area has a mix of all communities like the North Indians, Keralites, Tamilians, and Reddys. The constituency is home to some of the most backward sections of the society, large groups of migrants flock the city of Bangalore mainly due to lack of livelihood opportunities in the rural areas. This also has resulted in the establishment of slum colonies.KR Puram also has posh apartments and flats, given the proximity to the Technology Park.

Rural migrants live in overcrowded slums with poor hygiene and sanitation.  They experience many social problems and vulnerabilities associated with extreme urban poverty. Most of the children in the government schools in KR Puram are from these migrant communities.

School context
  1. GOVT PU COLLEGE is an Intermediate/Junior College school. It is a Co-educational institution. The medium of instruction is English. In the same complex is also Government high school which is again a co-ed. The complex has a total strength of 1500 students.
  2. It is unfortunate the government high school to date has not filled the vacancy for Chemistry, Biology, English and Maths teachers and the students are left to fend for themselves in these subjects. So is the condition in Government PU college
  3. Menstrual hygiene is another issue affecting a large number of adolescent girls manifested. The used sanitary pads are not properly disposed of off as one can notice existing toilets are clogged disposal of sanitary napkins in them.
  4. The school also lacks sports facilities including a PT teacher. The school and college authorities do seem too interested in promoting sports.
  5. A majority of the youth passing out from high school and college do not have the specific skill sets required by various sectors in the market. Providing market aligned livelihood/skill training to deprived youth will help them to find a decent job and to earn a sustained livelihood.

  • Problem statement
  1. Schooling without learning is a wasted opportunity. More than that, it is a great injustice: the children whom society is failing most are the ones who most need a good education to succeed in life
  2. Although they attend school, many leave without the skills for calculating the correct change from a transaction, reading a doctor’s instructions, or interpreting a campaign promise—let alone building a fulfilling career or educating their children. Learning outcomes are almost always much worse for the disadvantage frequenting government schools
  3. Accessibility to quality education is an issue in most government schools caused by various factors such as the availability of competent teachers, poor locality, resource availability, and infrastructure.
This learning crisis is a moral crisis. When delivered well, education cures a host of societal ills.

  • Project Intervention -In light of the above, The intervention has put in place the following Objectives and action plan to achieve the same.

Objectives
  1. Supportive Classes initiated in Science, Technology, English and Math’s (STEM) thus improving   Quality of Education d in PU College and High school
  2.  Improved Sanitation and hygiene condition in PU College & high school
  3. Empower 1500 students through skill development training in selected market-driven courses such as basic computers, functional English, computer hardware, basic management, and soft skills.
  4. Promote all-round development through sports, art, and culture.
