Proposed Project Description

Project rationale

The childhood disability remains unidentified and thus untreated during the initial period of birth owing to the lack of expert medical practitioners related to the field. The unavailability of the medical specialists and dedicated infrastructure compels many children to carry their disability to latter age in an aggravated form. Many children can be relieved or the sufferings can be minimized if offered with suitable care at early age. The disabled children residing in the rural areas are the most affected lot compared with their counterparts in city areas. Owing to both ignorance and poverty most of the disabled children in rural areas and slums are deprived of the medical intervention which can help them in overcoming the related disability. To provide opportunity to the neglected disabled children in the rural area it is imperative to reach out to them and aware them about the available surgical interventions which can help in reducing their disability. The lack of information about the available medical advancements and inability to afford the cost of the treatment many of the children are carrying their disability in their life which could have been minimized by the surgical intervention.

This project would include the below steps:-

  • Identification of Children with disabilities: Foundation has already organized screening camps for disabled children in the selected Districts of Central India and it has a waiting list for surgery of 270 disabled children.
  • Free Corrective Surgery camp: Foundation will organize free corrective surgery camp at Children Orthopaedic Care Institute Nagpur for the shortlisted children who need surgical intervention. The Corrective surgery will be performed by the expert medical team attached to the Foundation activities. All arrangements will be made for the Children with disabilities and their parents including the travel, food and stay at Hospital premises during camp.
  • Post-Operative Therapy and Distribution of Assistive aids: The surgical intervention must be followed by proper physiotherapy sessions to establish desired outcome of the corrective surgery. Many children residing in the remote areas miss these therapy sessions due to lack of facilities and thus fail to achieve the desired benefits of the surgical intervention. In order to provide the best care to operated children, post-operative therapy camp will be organized. Therapy camp will be residential in nature and regular therapy will be provided to the operated children during their stay in the camp. Assistive aids will be distributed free of cost after surgical intervention, at the end of therapy camp.

Till date 16000 children with disabilities have been screened, 3464 were operated, 6000 received comprehensive therapy and 3000 received orthotic support. Beneficiaries were from poor families across Maharashtra, MP, Chhattisgarh and Orissa.
