Proposed Project Description

Project Objective

  • To provide daily physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy to the needy children
  • To provide post-surgery intensive therapy to the children operated in the camps.
  • To train the parents of children with disability for home therapy program

Project rationale

Foundation is engaged with disabled children by screening them and performing free of cost surgery. During screening it is observed that many children do not need surgery and they can be treated by proper physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and orthotic aids. The children mostly belong to the rural areas where they don’t have access to therapy clinics and orthotic unit. Due to lack of these facilities children remain untreated and carry their disability to latter ages. If disabled children get proper comprehensive therapy it will reduce the burden of disability to great extent.

Corrective surgery must be accompanied with the intense therapy care immediately after the removal of plaster for maximizing the desired outcome. Post-surgery comprehensive therapy is mandatory for better results. In order to ensure better outcomes of their efforts they are running a comprehensive therapy unit in the premises of foundation which caters to the multiple therapy needs of the child with disability. Their therapy unit has been successful in bringing positive changes in lives of many children with disability.

INSPIRE Comprehensive Therapy centre

In order to provide various kinds of therapy services at one place NNMF runs comprehensive therapy centre called INSPIRE at Children orthopedic care institute, Ajni Square Nagpur. INSPIRE comprehensive therapy centre have facilities for various therapy services required by child for attaining his/her full potential in everyday life activities. Centre has experienced therapists specialized in pediatric therapy services. Almost 50-60 children take advantage of their comprehensive therapy services on daily basis and the number is likely to increase in near future. They have multidisciplinary approach to address diverse needs of children with disability. They provide following types of therapy services at their centre:

  • Paediatric Physiotherapy: Paediatric Physiotherapy treatment aims to promote a child’s independence and ability to reach physical milestones. Their Paediatric physiotherapists are specialists in child development and have specialist skills in evaluating, identifying, analyzing and treating child growth and movement issues. Their Paediatric physiotherapy program is specific to a child’s need, age and abilities. The Physiotherapy treatment helps in mobilizing stiff joints, prevent deformities, improving functional strength, balance, posture and coordination in day to day activities.
  • Paediatric Occupational therapy: Occupational therapy is a treatment that focuses on helping children to perform age-appropriate tasks or activities of daily living in the safest and most efficient manner possible. Their Occupational therapists evaluate child's skills for play activities, school performance, and activities of daily living and compare them to what is developmentally appropriate. Occupational Therapy facility provides quality services for children with physical, developmental, cognitive, and psychosocial disabilities. Their Occupational therapist evaluates a child and plan therapy activities to minimize the effects of disease, injury, congenital deficit, disability, or developmental delay. They train children for activities of daily living including: feeding, dressing, schooling activities etc. They use play therapy to improve Childs engagement and participation in day to day activities.
  • Language, Speech and Communication therapy: Their Speech and Language Therapists provide assessment and treatment for children in the areas of Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Dysphagia, Cognitive and Linguistic Development, Speech Articulation, Social Skills, Voice and Fluency/Stuttering. The goal of speech and language intervention is to maximize the child’s functional communication abilities across all settings.
  • Parents training and home therapy programs: Many children need repetitive therapy sessions on daily basis hence parents are trained for home therapy programs. Also many parents can’t afford to stay in city for therapy program of longer duration therefore they are trained for home therapy program by their therapist. Home therapy programs and parents training ensure sustenance of benefits achieved by surgery and therapy.
  • Periodic therapy assessment: Children are periodically assessed to measure the impact of therapy intervention and designing future therapy strategies.
  • Prescribing orthotic appliances, assistive devices and adaptive equipments: Customized orthotic appliances are prescribed to maintain the corrections derived from therapy program. Assistive devices are prescribed to enhance functional capabilities of the child. Commonly used orthotic appliances and assistive devices include- Ankle Foot Orthosis, Knee splints, CP chairs, Adaptive walkers etc. are prescribed by our therapists.
