Peepul runs a network of three Visual Exemplar schools in partnership with the government. These schools serve over 1000 children from the poorest of the poor backgrounds who come from vulnerable communities. The schools are visual exemplars and serve as ‘bright-spots’ in the government education system and are the lighthouses for the possibilities within it while setting a benchmark for ‘what great look like’ in the context of government schools. By laying a strong focus on students, teachers and the community, the Exemplar schools undertake a whole-school transformation approach while implementing international best practices contextualised (the schools adopt strong codification practices that allow easy replication of the best practices by the system at-scale) to the needs of the students rendering exceptional outcomes – 85 % of the children meet or exceed grade-level expectations, while recording average attendance at 75 % and retention rate of students at 90%

Proposed Project Description

Overview:


Peepul runs three exemplar schools in Delhi under a public-private-partnership with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. These Exemplar schools cater to over 1000 children who hail from the poorest of the poor backgrounds – the most vulnerable. As part of the partnership, Peepul is responsible for the entire ‘enrolment to attainment chain’ of the students. We hire and train teachers who cater to the students while taking care of the regular day-to-day functioning of the schools. We engage with the community, parents, students and government to ensure that our schools are able to serve each and every child within its premise. These schools are lighthouses for the possibilities in a government-administered school, proving that high-quality education is possible in government schools – they are the bright spots! The schools implement international best practices contextualized to the context of the students. The results that our schools have achieved are remarkable – 85% of our students meet or exceed grade-level expectations with more than 75% average attendance.

The schools serve as visual exemplars for the larger public education system. They set a benchmark for ‘what great looks like’ in a government school. Through these visual exemplars, we have created bright spots in the government system, to build belief in the drastic improvement possible, and showcase excellence within the same system.

Approach:

The approach that we have taken is towards ‘whole-school transformation’ in our schools. At the heart of our approach lies the strong focus on creating ‘meaningful student-teacher interactions’ which ensure that our children learn, and do not drop out of school. From enrolment to retention, our data shows exemplar results, therefore. We lay focus on three pillars of this transformation – students, teachers and parents. We conduct regular assessments throughout the year and use the data to improve our intervention. We have Academic Coordinators who support our teachers to guide them to perform their roles to the best of their abilities while our community officers cultivate strong relationships with the communities our children come from and build their awareness regarding their child’s learning journey at the schools. We deem the community to be an important partner in our interventions.

We leverage multiple processes to help create an environment that nurtures a learning environment for all our students. We conduct regular parent-teacher meetings, and school management committees which help us involve the community in the learning journey of the children. We implement the best classroom management practices to ensure our children remain engaged in the classroom and learn. At Peepul, we stay true to our mission that ‘every child’ is able to attain their potential and therefore provide support for students with special needs – we invest in the capacity building of our teachers to ensure that can cater to children with special needs.

We take an extremely structured approach towards out hiring our teachers and carefully select them. After selection, our teachers undergo rigorous pre-service training, followed by an intensive 25-day in-service training at the schools. Even after they have started teaching, there are regular classroom observations that take place to facilitate appropriate feedback and render requisite support that allows them to cater to every child’s needs. We heavily invest in their capacity-building with weekly workshops. All these measures help ensure that our teachers are able to create conditions to nurture an environment conducive for meaningful student-teacher engagement.

For the members of the community, we conduct induction and orientations as their children initiate their learning journeys at school. We are constantly in touch with them through our community officers and we make regular calls to them to check on attendance. Our parents-teacher meetings, therefore, have recorded an average 95% attendance rate indicating the high-spirited participation of parents. The engagements are continuous as we invite them to observe classrooms and conduct events like ‘Chai Pe Baat Cheet’ to keep them engaged in their child’s learning journey.

Impact:

The impact that our schools have created therefore speaks for our approach and ‘Exemplar model’. When we started our journey in 2015, there was only one school with 9 children. Within a year, enrolments rose to 230. Today, we run three schools in partnership with the government that cater to 1100 children who are from the poorest of the poor backgrounds. The performance of our children exceeds those at regular government schools and it has been validated by external assessments as well. Our children perform ~ 14x better in English in comparison to other government schools, while performing ~ 4x times in Maths and Hindi in comparison to other government schools. While we have generated high impact, the rate of return has also significant. Our cost per child in the schools are comparable to what the government pays for each child.

The performance and impact of our schools have led to visits by eminent personalities to our schools. Ex- MHRD Secretary, Mr Anil Swarup, on visiting our school opined that efforts should be made to ‘replicate and scale’ it. Amongst other eminent individuals, our schools have been visited by Lt. Governor of Delhi Shri Anil Baijal, Prince Charles (Prince of Wales) etc.
