Proposed Project Description

Ratna Nidhi has been providing artificial prosthetic aids to people with Movement disabilities since 2000. We have distributed close to 2.5 lakh mobility aids till date by organizing camps in different states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh etc.

According to the Census of India (2011), 5,48,418 people suffer from Movement disability in Maharashtra. Ratna Nidhi has also been empaneled by the Government of Maharashtra (Medical Education and Drug Department) in January 2019 under the Mahaparivartan program for providing 4000 artificial mobility aids like Jaipur foot, Calipers, Crutches and Prosthetic hands to people with Movement disability in Maharashtra. Through our work on ground and interaction with the District Social welfare officers across different districts of Maharashtra, we are provided with the number of people suffering from Movement disability in these areas. We also have the support of the government officials in these districts for beneficiary mobilization and infrastructure support. Hence this project seeks to provide free prosthetic limbs to the identified beneficiaries in Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Nanded, Latur, Jalgaon, Chandrapur, Yavatmal, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Kolapur in Maharashtra.

We will also be providing free physiotherapy to the beneficiaries of this project, in order to strengthen their muscles, thereby enabling them to walk comfortably with their new aids.

Hence we seek financial support to help us achieve our goal under the Mahaparivartan program and impact the lives of thousands of people suffering from Movement disability.

Project Objective

Provide 1515 artificial prosthetic aids to people with Movement disability in Mumbai/Pune, Nasik/Nanded, Latur/Jalgaon, Chandrapur/ Yavatmal/Raigad/ Ratnagiri and Kolapur in Maharashtra over 1 year.

Methodology

The following steps will be involved in implementing the project:

1. Beneficiary Mobilization

Our team of social workers will be responsible for mobilizing the beneficiaries from different villages in the proposed location. We will collaborate with the District social welfare officer, Disability officers in the government department of various districts and the Collector to assist us in the mobilization.

Advertisements will be made using posters and in local civil hospitals, government medical colleges and village to village canvassing will be carried out by our social workers. We also work closely with Angan wadis and Asha workers in rural areas to help us mobilize beneficiaries from different pockets.

Ratna Nidhi provides aids to beneficiaries who are identified with the help of the Collector, Zilla Parishad CEO and District Social welfare officers. These government officials have a list of the disabled population in their district. These people are from low income groups with a salary range of Rs.5000 to 15,000 per month. Many of them work in the informal sector and barely make enough to survive. Hence we cater to such groups and we will be giving special preference to women and children for this project.

2. Screening camp

A screening camp will be organized across the proposed locations, where our technicians and prosthetic engineers will take measurements of the beneficiary in order to manufacture the artificial limb.

3. Manufacturing the prosthetic limbs

We have a dedicated team of prosthetic engineer and technicians who have over 15 years of experience in manufacturing artificial limbs. The team will be travelling to different camp locations to take measurements of the beneficiaries. These measurements will then be bought back to our Jaipur foot centre in Mumbai and the aids will be manufactured by our technicians. We will be manufacturing Below elbow prosthetic hands, Unilateral/Bilateral Jaipur foot, Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO) Calliper and Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) Calliper.

4. Distribution camp and physiotherapy

After a month of the screening camp, a distribution camp will be organized to provide and fit artificial limbs to the identified beneficiaries. The beneficiaries will also be provided with free physiotherapy by our physiotherapist. This will ensure that their muscles are strengthened over time and they can comfortably walk around in their new limb.

5. Project Monitoring

Our team will have a follow up call/visit post the distribution camp with the beneficiaries, ensuring that they are using the limbs and practising the physiotherapy regularly.

Project Outcomes

This project will impact over 1100 beneficiaries with Movement Disability and they will be direct beneficiaries of the project. The beneficiary count may be higher but the minimum count will be 1100.

The project will also impact 4400 indirect beneficiaries who are the family members of the beneficiary impacted.

As a result of this intervention the project envisions to accomplish;

Short term

  •  Access to quality prosthetic aids for free
  •  Improved mobility for the beneficiary
  •  Decreased medical expenses on artificial mobility appliances.

Salient Features

  1. Empanelled by Government of Maharashtra under Mahaparivartan program to implement this project
