Proposed Project Description

The Village Development Program (VDP) is Rehab India Foundation’s flagship project. Combining deeply interlinked sectors – education, healthcare, sanitation, and economic upliftment, our organization has adopted villages from across the length and breadth of the country. Adopting individual villages in comprehensively planned 5-Year Cycles, our volunteers and employees work alongside local population to build strong rural communities, by ensuring holistic and equitable development. Perhaps most importantly, inculcating a stable, sustainable vision for the future in the minds and hearts of young and old alike, has been among our greatest achievements under this Program.

With a view to maximise the utilisation and benefit of our projects and programmes, the Cluster Programme has been introduced. The primary concept of this programme is to choose a group (cluster) of backward villages in the same region. Rehab India foundation under its VDP which focusses on improving socio and economic conditions of rural India. VDP is designed as a 5-year strategy model to transform the village and changing lives of people. Rehab India foundation has been able to reach 76 villages and 88,899 beneficiaries under its VDP in various parts of India in last seven years. Rehab India foundation is successfully implementing its VDP Programme in 7 states -Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.

The aim of VDP is to rehabilitate the marginalized community by facilitating a holistic sustainable development in the areas of,

Education: Our aim is to work with the children of the village community in the rural areas to not only have access to schools, but also have self-driven motivation to enroll themselves, and attend classes on a regular basis. Initiatives of the Foundation have tackled issues ranging from scholarship access and enrolment campaigns, to teacher training, and parent-teacher meetings, that are aimed at assessing the quality and regularity of a child’s education process, instead of just the bare-minimum of building more schools.

Health Care: Our aim is to ensure that everyone has access to basic medical facilities provided by the government through Public Health Centers (PHCs). In order to apprise the community about the facilities and facilitate a platform for them to avail the facilities, we conduct health awareness programmes in association with local PHCs. Our successful campaigns with the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activists) workers in the Hazipara and Talghat village of West Bengal and Bihar respectively, have motivated us to strengthen our health care facilities by raising awareness around the common issues of breast cancer, anemia, breast feeding, immunization, viral hepatitis and personal hygiene.

Drinking Water Projects have been successfully implemented in several parts of the country, along with the installation of tube wells, hand-dug wells, and water catchment schemes. Public sanitation drives, in the form of awareness campaigns, training programs with health workers, and construction of hygienic public and common toilets. Locality based purification mechanisms, and rain water harvesting projects are among the new initiatives we are deliberating upon.

Economic Development: Rehab is working with income generation projects to improve the economic status of the poor by working aggressively on the issues pertaining to artisans, livelihood, Interest Free Credit, Micro Credit, Self Help Groups and Skill training programs. We have planned a variety of platforms to facilitate the economic growth of the Rehab adopted villages, the programs comprise of Self Help Groups intended to garner capacity building and promote gender empowerment, Partnership Farming where the farmers are provided interest-free loans where Rehab takes the 75% burden of the farming, whereas programmes like providing skill development trainings, micro-finance and literacy camps are designed to provide opportunities and facilitate conditions under which the community can flourish.

National Integration: We realized that a huge section of our village communities lie to peripheries and get marginalized not only politically and economically but also socially. In order to bring a sense of belongingness and align the population with the mainstream, we believe an awareness around their national heritage and its legacy plays a key role in understanding one’s location. Therefore, Rehab India Foundation conducts programmes for the village community which are of national importance so that the community is apprised about the various factors that bind us together as a country, which would not have been generally accessible to them without any external source.

1. Rehab India Foundation, recognizing the need for Sustainable Livelihood has undertaken small business and family upliftment, skill development training, and certificate distribution programs that increase the scope for impoverished sections of rural society to secure a steady income. We are, therefore driven towards new initiatives which involve specific skill training across a variety of low and semi-skilled job sectors, such as tailoring, simple manufacturing work, and basic clerical work, as well as employment drives and counselling sessions that would introduce these communities to the world of formal employment.

2. While empowering women and ensuring they're independent economic and social sustainability has long been a key prerogative of Rehab India’s larger projects, expanding a more focused, and more direct Gender Equality initiative is one of our greatest concerns moving forward. In a country that still has plenty to do in terms of alleviating restrictive and oppressive social stigmas targeted against women, transgender individuals and members of other sexual minorities, our approach is bipartite. While material autonomy – through better education and incomes – is a fundamental aspect of ensuring that non-male members of society can stand on their own feet and gain respect, we believe that changing deeply entrenched attitudes and mindsets are of equal, if not greater significance.

3. The necessity of sustainable development, in coherence with the principles of respect for and protection of our environment, is a priority of paramount importance for us at Rehab India Foundation. Therefore, both our urban and rural development projects attach great significance to ensuring that we not only improve the lives of the underprivileged but also that they live in a cleaner, healthier surroundings. Clean up drives and environment protection awareness campaigns are major methods by which we seek to contribute to this fundamental goal.
