Project Synopsis

REAL implemented the model school project with the purpose of promoting quality remedial education system for the period from February 2019 to June 2022 benefitting 5606 children. The project works with identified 10 schools / 30 villages to bring key changes and positive impact on all round development of schools as per the requirements of RIE provisions.

Proposed Project Description

REAL implemented a ‘Model School Project’ during 2019 – 2022 in 10 schools of Puducherry with the objective improving the quality of education. The project was supported by Eaton and Plan India. The project focused on the three main pillars of quality education that include - 1) Good infrastructure; 2) Quality teaching and learning, and 3) Community participation. The project activities have been designed based on these three pillars. The project activities focused on making the school infrastructure friendlier for children, strengthening the teaching and learning processes and strengthening the school management committees. Despite the multiple headwinds and challenges imposed on the project by the pandemic, REAL was able to cope with the challenges by adopting a combination of online methods and physical, in-person methods as appropriate for the activities. The project has resulted in impressive positive outcomes as listed below;

1. Improved infrastructure and learning facilities to support quality learning environment (child-friendly classrooms, science lab, library, clean toilets, safe drinking water, access to incinerator for hygienic disposal of sanitary napkins of girl students)

2. Improved academic performance of children, especially the slow learners through the remedial classes

3. Enhanced solidarity and abilities of the school management committees to take collective action for development of their schools

4. Strong collaboration amongst communities, Panchayat Raj Institutions, and the Education department of the Government.

Building on the learning and experiences, REAL proposes to cover 10 deserving schools in Pondicherry to enable them become model schools. This will help spread the underlying concept of how quality of education can be enhanced in Government schools. The demonstration effect may influence the Education Department of the Government of Pondicherry to scale up the model in other schools in their jurisdiction. There is already a demonstrated precedence of similar impactful intervention in New Delhi, where the Delhi Government has achieved significant improvements in the quality of education offered by its schools. Hands-on experience closer to home may drive Government of Pondicherry to scale up such model school concept to a larger level of adoption covering all of their schools in a phased manner.

2. Goal:

The overarching goal of the project is to facilitate access to quality education for the underprivileged children studying in government schools enabled through a good learning environment.

2.1 Objectives:

Overall Objective:  To create an enabling learning environment and quality education 


Specific Objective



1. To promote a healthy and sanitation environment in the target school by improving infrastructure facilities.

2. To improve the academic performance of children through supplementary coaching

3. To promote productive youth engagement in development through sports and recreation activities

1. Children learn in an enabling and conducive environment in 10 schools 

2. Children obtained 70% to 85% of marks in the public examination 

3. Skilled and involved youth in the target villages 



4. 95% of target schools improved infrastructure facilities

5. 85% of children obtained 70% to 85% of marks in the public exam

6. At least 60% of youth are ready to contribute to the community development 

2.2 Strategies and Approaches:

The Project


This project focuses on creating an enabling and effective learning environment in the target areas and empowering youth.


The interventions are:  


· Construction of toilet, compound wall, and kitchen

· Upgradation of drinking water facilities with provision of filters

· Study centres and provision of materials to the centre

· Extra-curricular activities at the centres 

· Sports activities for youth and provision of materials 


This project proposed to reach 2000 children and youth directly, and reach 5000 children and youth indirectly in 10 villages of Pondicherry Region. The estimated cost of this project is Rs. 1,80,13,000/-.


Project Approach:

I. Community Mobilization: Before implementing the project, the team would mobilize the communities to brief them about the project, and the need for their cooperation for the success of this project. It would motivate them to participate meaningfully in the project cycle management. 

II. Child-Centred Approach: The team would consider the principle “best interest of the child” in all its interactions and interventions, where they involve children in the discussion; it would provide an opportunity to raise their concerns and involve them in the decision-making process on the matters that affect them. 

III. Safeguarding Children and Youth: The safeguarding children and young people are important nowadays as there are many incidents of child abuse, exploitation, and neglect. The project team would consider to integrate safeguarding and protection elements in all its interventions, meetings, while dealing with the children.  

IV. Gender Transformative Approach: During the implementation of this project, the project identifies the existing social norms towards gender and promotes positive gender norms in the community. Promoting agency in girls and young women, and working closely with boys and men to make them become champions of change to promote gender equality. Ensure the improvement of girls' and young women's condition and values in the project interventions, and create an enabling environment for the girls and young women’s empowerment and equal opportunities for boys and girls.
