Proposed Project Title

Repair Karo

Thematic Area

Ensuring environmental sustainability, ecological balance, wildlife & natural resources conservation

Sub Thematic Area

Recycling & Waste Management

Project Synopsis

Repair extends the life of a product, reduces burden on waste, lowers environmental footprint and saves money. Traditionally, India has had a very strong reuse and repair culture, we had a cobbler, an electric repair shop, a watch repair technician in every street. However, cheap products made cheaper with year round discounts combined with the convenience of online shopping has made repair and reuse out of favour. This campaign ties in well with the Indian government

Proposed Project Description

Repair Karo

A campaign by Saahas

Objective:

Reduce waste quantity by extending a products’ life: Encourage repairing of broken/damaged everyday products

HashTags: #RepairKaro #RightToRepair

Target Group:

Urban educated male/female population in the age group 18 to 60 years who are in the middle to high income group, and are active on social media, based in Bengaluru and NCR. As this campaign spreads, we would take it up in other cities as well.

Concept:

Repair extends the life of a product, reduces burden of waste, lowers environmental footprint and saves money. Traditionally, India has had a very strong reuse and repair culture, we had a cobbler, an electric repair shop, a watch repair technician in every street. However, cheap products made cheaper with year round discounts combined with the convenience of online shopping has made repair and reuse out of favour.

This campaign ties in well with the Indian government’s ‘Right to Repair’ initiative (https://www.righttorepairindia.in/ ). Saahas would look for formal collaboration with the relevant Ministries (MeitY, MoEFCC, MoHUA). Through this campaign, we aim to revive the repair culture.

We want to sensitise people to the Joys of Repair, namely:

  • repair gives a sense of satisfaction especially if you do it yourself;
  • repair empowers, as you are incharge and not a puppet of the marketing

gimmicks,

  • repair saves money while buying new products burns a hole in your pocket;
  • repair connects you with the local community;
  • repair improves your knowledge of the products you use, their parts and

cost etc. and trains you to buy better products

We also want to make repair more accessible by:

  • hosting repair melas in residential communities, public places etc.
  • capturing and popularising repair/refurbishment stories
  • highlight vendor (repair service providers) stories to sensitise people

on how this is important for creating local livelihoods

  • Build a crowd sourced database on various repair entities in a city by

asking people to do google tagging using specified right tags for easy search.

  • Campaign’s Appeal and Engagement Potentials:

  • It caters to all age groups, gender, socio-economic profile
  • A large number of people are now concerned about the environment and

they are wanting to live a more sustainable lifestyle

  • There is a clear and simple call for action which anyone can exercise

without much effort

  • There is scope for interesting storytelling
  • There is scope for developing different kinds of content - Social Media

focussed, stories, videos, print articles and news, campaigns

  • There is a human angle - the repair technicians, their stories and challenges

will be appealing

  • It is not divisive and not against any group, it is a campaign that can bring

all together

Salient Features:

  1. This campaign will help with the reduction of waste generated by extending

life of products through repair.
2. Create awareness amongst consumers towards purchasing long lasting

 products.

3. Will help build awareness towards the need to manufacture products

which not only lasts long but are also easily repairable.

4. This will help generate livelihood and upskilling of repair service providers.

 Partnerships and Collaborations:

Media house to partner with to take the message wider, help us reach the target audience through print, radio, TV, social media

  • Active Citizen groups for outreach for on ground campaigns
  • Google/ ApnaComplex / My Gate apps etc. to improve access to

About Saahas

SAAHAS

Saahas is a not-for-profit organisation and was set up in 2001 under the Karnataka Society’s Act 1960 as one of the first non-governmental organisations working in the waste sector. Saahas primarily focuses on programs based on the concepts of ‘source segregation' and ‘decentralised waste management’ based on the concepts of Circular Economy. Saahas works with government institutions, businesses, households and educational institutions to bring attention to best practices in the management of solid waste.

Saahas has been implementing on ground waste management programs since 2001. We have presence in 12 states of the country where it has been executing programs that involve detailed baseline assessment, waste audit and characterization, development and execution of IEC, capacity building, waste segregation, collection, transportation and processing of different waste streams and mapping of recyclers and building the reverse supply chain. Our programs focus on waste reduction and resource recovery from waste and our strength is implementation coupled with strong monitoring and data capture.

Work Profile:

At Saahas, we use our practical experience in the waste sector to provide consultancy and advisory services to local governments, international agencies, corporates and community-based organisations. We have assisted various governmental authorities with preparing policies, strategies and regulations on waste management including plastic waste management in urban and rural areas. We have also worked on research-based projects with several international agencies on Indian solid waste management systems. We conducted surveys and baseline assessments, studied the waste value chain, carried out interviews with the relevant stakeholders and assessed the viability of solutions among others.
