Proposed Project Description

Problem: Telangana faces a significant issue with 13.4% of girls and 12% of boys dropping out of class 9, mainly due to financial constraints, child labor, and early marriages. Recognizing the importance of girls' education in empowerment, Sankalp has been supporting girl-child education since 2007.

Solution: Sankalp proposes identifying and assisting 100 economically and socially vulnerable girls in Hyderabad. The project aims to provide scholarships and a comprehensive support system to enable their return to school. This includes education on preventing child sexual abuse (CSA), life skills education (LSE), and parental counseling.

Aim of the Project: To address the dropout crisis, Sankalp proposes identifying and assisting an additional 100 economically and socially vulnerable girls and boys in Hyderabad. The primary objective is to provide scholarships, enabling their return to school. The project embraces a three-fold approach, integrating scholarship support, education on preventing child sexual abuse (CSA), and life skills education (LSE), alongside parental counseling.

Objectives:

  • Identify and support 100 economically and socially vulnerable children.
  • Provide scholarships for their return to school.
  • Deliver comprehensive education on CSA and LSE.
  • Counsel parents to value their children's education.
  • Support students who dropped out from class 8 onwards until they complete class 10

Project strategy: Through this project, Sankalp will identify and facilitate the return of economically vulnerable girls and boys to school. This project would adopt a three-fold approach as a project strategy.

Along with scholarship support, children would be provided education on preventing child sexual abuse (CSA) and life skills education (LSE). Parents would be counselled to value their children’s education and provide them with an enabling learning environment at home. The students who have dropped school from class 8 onwards will be supported and handheld till they pass out of class 10.

Outreach and geography: 100 children in Hyderabad, Telangana, from 5 schools catering to children from economically weaker sections, both old and new cities of Hyderabad.

Monitoring and evaluation: A coordinator will be appointed exclusively for the project. The coordinator will closely work with schools and monitor their academic progress and children’s attendance. The coordinator will counsel parents periodically and conduct sessions on CSA and LSE. The coordinator would draw baseline and end-line scores of students’ progress and submit a comparative report establishing the impact. Funding partners would be given visibility on the website, social media platforms, and schools. Sankalp would also ensure that all children who complete class 10 are enrolled in higher secondary education/nursing/technical/skill-based job-oriented courses.

Relevance of the project: This project contributes to sustainable development goals-1, 4, 5, and 10- for No poverty, Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Reduced Inequalities. Significantly, this will also enable us to mutually contribute to achieving sustainable goal no. 17, which stands for Partnerships for the Goals. It also aligns with the national agenda of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and “Beti Bachao, Beti Bachao” which indicates save children and educated children and training of upper primary school girls and boys on life skills training.

Project Impact: This project is for three years and currently we are proposing for one year. However, to measure the impact properly, if students are supported for 3 years from class 8 to 10, this will be more impactful that we have covered them supporting three years not only in shaping their education but also in shaping their thoughts and making informed choices.

About Sankalp

Sankalp is a registered NGO working to promote girl child education and senior care since 2007. Sankalp has extended scholarship support to more than 3000 socially and economically vulnerable girl students from 7 schools in neighborhoods in Hyderabad and 100 students who lost parents to COVID-19. Through its flagship program, PANTS, Sankalp is already working on school-based prevention of child sexual abuse programs and has reached out to more than 60 government and private schools in Hyderabad and trained more than 50000 stakeholders through physical sessions. With the rise of violence against children during the lockdown, we have virtually conducted CSA and life skills education sessions for stakeholders. Sankalp also takes up need-based humanitarian initiatives such as emergency relief services. For the last academic year 2023-24, Sankalp provided 4000 school kits (worth Rs. 1000/- each) which included books, pens, erasers, color pencil box, crayons, scale, lunch box, water bottle, etc in both government and private schools of Medchal, Sangareddy, and Siddipet districts.

Sankalp has staff and volunteers from the social development sector. They are experts in working with child rights, gender, and counseling. Given the capacity, we are well-positioned to execute the project and achieve the stated objectives of the project.
