Project Synopsis

Menstrual hygiene management is not just a physical health matter but a human right too; it has profound psychological implications. SMFs Project Shakti aims to empower women in prisons and the community through menstrual hygiene awareness workshops within the prison facilities and the community, accompanied by the distribution of informative booklets and interactive sessions to encourage open discussions about menstrual health and breaking taboos. These workshops are conducted in collaboration with the India Vision Foundation and knowledge partners CSR Box, covering vulnerable communities in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu. Sanitary napkin vending machines have been installed in all prisons of Haryana and Uttrakhand, ensuring access to essential menstrual hygiene products. Women inmates are also taught how to use cloth in hygienic manner multiple times considering the limitation of access of Sanitary Pads inside the prison.

Proposed Project Description



Goal: The goal is to instil the values of hygiene and safe practices in women inmates as well as to introduce them to menstrual hygiene management methods.

1. De-stigmatizing Menstruation:

-      Conduct awareness campaigns within the prisons to break the silence and de-stigmatize menstruation.

-      Organize workshops and discussions to create an open dialogue about menstrual health, addressing common myths and misconceptions.


2. Access to Safer Menstrual Health Products:

-      Facilitate access to safer and more hygienic menstrual health products for female inmates.

-      Collaborate with organizations or sponsors to provide a sustainable supply of eco-friendly menstrual products.


3. Education and Awareness on Menopause:

-      Develop informative sessions and materials to raise awareness about menopause among women inmates.

-      Include discussions on managing menopausal symptoms and accessing necessary healthcare support.


4. Knowledge Base Development:

-       Establish a robust knowledge base on menstrual hygiene by providing informative materials and resources.

-       Conduct interactive workshops to educate women inmates about the biological aspects of menstruation and the importance of maintaining menstrual hygiene.


5. Sustainable Behaviour Change:

-       Design sensitization components with a focus on sustainability, aiming to create lasting behaviour change post-workshops.

-       Incorporate follow-up sessions and resources to reinforce the knowledge gained during the workshops.


This proposed project aims to contribute significantly to the overall health and well-being of women inmates, promoting dignity, education and empowerment in managing their reproductive and menstrual health.

Spark Minda Group has a legacy of Community Development since decades. Collaborating with India Vision Foundation in 2016, menstrual health and hygiene management workshops with communities have been conducted in Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, along with sessions conducted in the prisons for the female inmates of Haryana and Uttarakhand.
