United Way Mumbai’s HeadStart STEM adopts a comprehensive approach to promote STEM learning, particularly amongst girls. It engages with government run and low income schools in urban and rural communities, which are under-resourced and have poor learning outcomes. While introducing children to STEM, the project works towards creating an enabling school environment and an ecosystem that supports student learning. The key objectives of the project are – (i) To equip schools with necessary infrastructure, training and resources for STEM education; (ii) To encourage scientific thought and learning amongst children; (iii) To create an enabling environment for education of girls in schools and communities

Proposed Project Description

HeadStart STEM adopts a comprehensive approach to promote STEM learning, particularly amongst girls. United Way Mumbai engages with government run and low income schools in urban and rural communities, which are under-resourced and have poor learning outcomes.

 

The key objectives of the programme are -

  • Equipping schools with necessary infrastructure, training and resources for STEM education
  • Encouraging scientific thought and learning amongst children 
  • Creating an enabling environment for STEM education, particularly for girls in schools and communities

The project includes the following key interventions –

  • Infrastructure Upgradation: Set up mini science centres, STEM libraries and digital learning platforms equipped with audio visual lessons for Grades 1 – 10.
  • Teacher Development: Focused training for teachers in pedagogy and use of new learning material.
  • Learner Support and Exposure: Set up digital learning on STEM concepts, organize remedial Maths classes, publish monthly STEM newsletters and conduct exposure visits to STEM-focused places
  • Engaging the Community: Engage parents and School Management Committees to create a supportive ecosystem.


Volunteering Opportunities: Employee volunteers may conduct Interactive sessions with the students to discuss the challenges and opportunities of STEM professions, accompanying students for exposure visits, developing AV content on Science experiments, demonstrating scientific principles through everyday material, etc.
