There has been a deluge of homeless people, daily wage labourers and their families across Delhi/NCR. It is no mean task to feed the lakhs of these people who have nothing to call their own. We aim to share the load with the government and other organizations working on the field. We are covering three verticals- hygiene, shelter and nutrition. We are providing nutritional relief to over 30,000 homeless, daily wagers and disadvantaged families across 7 states- Delhi, Assam, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. We hope to reach out to as many distressed people as possible until the lockdown is lifted and beneficiaries are assured of their security.

Proposed Project Description

The lockdown has left many of us in the lurch. Many of us are lucky enough to have access to groceries, medicines and safe shelter, however, a large section of society has been left with no means to fulfil even basic needs. Here’s how Wishes and Blessings is helping the homeless and daily wage labourers cope with this emergency situation
Q1. What is the situation like at the ground level?
The ground situation is something we have never seen before. Lakhs of daily wage labourers no longer have a regular source of income to fend for themselves and have been left stranded with nothing to call their own. The situation worsens as we move away from urban localities to the innermost areas of the country where tribal communities reside. Many of these underprivileged people survive on hand to mouth and have no savings to help them tide over this period of lockdown.
While the lockdown is welcome and needed to fight the spread of Covid-19, it has given rise to another equally worrying concern- hunger and starvation. It is equally important to prevent death due to Covid-19 as it is to prevent death due to starvation.
Q2. How is Wishes and Blessings making a difference?
Lakhs of homeless people, daily wage labourers and their families across India no longer have the means to fulfil even basic needs, and it is no easy task to feed those who have nothing to call their own. We aim to share the load with the government and other organizations working on the field and follow a step-by-step process.
We have converted our day care centres into shelter homes to ensure that the homeless have a safe space to stay till the lockdown is lifted. Hygiene supplies have been procured to safeguard the health of all.
A larger part of the project is providing nutritional support to the homeless, daily wagers and underprivileged families affected by the lockdown. Before the spread of Covid-19 and the implementation of the lockdown, we were serving 3 meals a day to over 600 underprivileged people across Delhi/NCR, under our flagship project- The Daily Meals Programme. We scaled up operations and in the first week of the lockdown itself, we served cooked food to over 9,000 people across Delhi/NCR and have grown ever since then. At our peak we served meals to 15,000 homeless and daily wagers, and provided ration kits to over 8,300 families
However, the numbers have fluctuated due to several reasons including availability of funds as well as actual need on the ground. As of 7th May, we have served 11,07,230 meals, distributed 18,419 ration kits to over 9,000 families and 8,000 hygiene kits across 7 states.
We are now serving meals to 4,680 beneficiaries each day, and providing nutritional kits to 4,919 at-risk families across 7 states:
Assam
Delhi
Jharkhand
Tamil Nadu
Uttar Pradesh
Uttarakhand
West Bengal
We have partnered with several grassroots level organizations to execute relief operations smoothly. In addition, the Wishes and Blessings Relief Vans travel across Delhi to distribute emergency supplies including cooked food, ration kits and hygiene essentials.
The numbers on the ground are increasing day by day, and we're trying to reach out to as many distressed people as possible. We will continue Covid relief until the 15th of June, and will extend this as and when need be.
Q3. How are we ensuring the safety of all?
We are adhering to the safety protocols as closely as possible. The meals are cooked under strict sanitary conditions and the team and volunteers wear safety gear at all times. At the centres, the beneficiaries sit at a distance of 1m.
We are trying to work as efficiently and as safely as possible within the limited conditions and space available. Our priority has and always will be the health of our beneficiaries.
Q4. How are you assured that your money will be used for providing relief?
As part of our promise to stay true to our mission of transparency and accountability, all donors are added to our Whatsapp group where regular updates are shared. A formal project report with all documentation will be shared towards the end of the project. Please be assured that the entirety of your support will be utilised to directly aid those affected by the lockdown.
