Project Description

Nearly 266 million adults in India cannot read or write, and are thereby deprived of critical growth opportunities. To address this deficiency, the company has come up with the Adult Literacy Program (ALP) in the year 2000. ALP runs on TCS’ proprietary Computer-based Functional Literacy (CBFL) solution, which employs innovative information and communications technology solutions to promote literacy. The CBFL solution enables adult learners to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic within 50-55 learning hours. Its prime focus is on words rather than alphabets, thus enabling students to acquire a 700-word vocabulary in nine Indian and three foreign languages. The program uses a combination of teaching methods such as software, multimedia presentations, and printed materials. Animated graphics, voice-overs, and puppets are also employed to make the learning process more enjoyable. The company has partnered with local governments, non-governmental organizations, corporates, academic institutions, as well as jail authorities in 15 states to implement ALP. In collaboration with the local prisons authority, the company has achieved 100% literacy at the district jail in Lucknow, India, by making 1,431 inmates functionally literate.
The company has leveraged its leadership in the IT space to run innovative programs that address access to education and skilling challenges facing the community at large. Its solutions in the skilling field include BPS Employability Training, a 100-hour program that has provided well-rounded education to over 66,000 youngsters from marginalized communities so far, and IT Employability Training, which has trained nearly 2,400 students from rural engineering and science colleges in technical and business skills and general aptitude.
BridgeIT is an initiative created by the company to address the challenges of socially and economically disadvantaged communities. BridgeIT grew out of the Tata Affirmative Action Program adopted by the Tata group in April 2007, which focuses on the 4Es—Education, Employability, Employment and Entrepreneurship—the program attempts to address the prevailing social inequities in India by proactively reaching out to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) communities.
Its work has been successfully implemented in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh with NGO partners, the National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR) and Pratham InfoTech Foundation.
