A List of 10 big CSR Projects in WASH Sector in India (FY 2016-17)
 

WASH is an acronym that stands for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. It is a matter of importance as universal, affordable and sustainable access to WASH is a key public health issue within the international development and is a focus of the sixth goal of SDG. The government of India, through ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, is implementing the program in the communities and schools across the country. The Program is partnering with private enterprises and non- profits in an attempt to make the initiative successful.

The article brings forward the initiatives of major companies and ventures who have contributed to making the initiative successful.

1. ITC Limited
ITC works to create enduring values for the nation through innovations in business models that seek to synergize the building of the economic, ecological and social capital as a unified strategy. The Triple Bottom Line approach has enabled the company to make a meaningful contribution to livelihood creation and environmental replenishment.
Project Name: Health and Sanitation Program
Location: PAN India
CSR Budget for the project: 105.44 cr.

ITC Health & Sanitation Initiative: To promote hygienic environment through prevention of open defecation and reduce the incidence of water-borne diseases, 8,550 household toilets were constructed during the year 2016-17 in collaboration with the Government Swacch Bharat Abhiyan. With this, a total of 23,979 low-cost sanitary units have been constructed so far in the company's catchment areas covering 22 districts in 14 States. In areas with water quality problems, 85 Reverse Osmosis plants have been installed providing safe drinking water to nearly 1 lakh rural households in Andhra Pradesh. Efforts to enhance awareness on various health issues continued through ‘Swasthya Choupal', the Company's e-Choupal Rural Health initiative. A network of 300 women Village Health Champions (VHCs) across seven Districts in Uttar Pradesh and three in Madhya Pradesh reached out to nearly two lakh women, adolescent girls and school children during the year. The VHCs conducted over 5,000 village meetings and participated in over 2,000 group events apart from making door-to-door visits focusing on aspects of sanitation, menstrual and personal hygiene, family planning, diarrhoea prevention, and nutrition. Through the company's ‘Savlon Swasth India Mission', a combination of audio-visual aids, games, and practical training was leveraged to encourage healthy hygiene habits.
Impact: The Company was able to reach more than 9 lakh children from around 1,900 schools in 23 cities during last FY. Under the ‘First Cry Programme’, 60,000 mothers were made aware of hygienic practices in 1,500 hospitals.

Location: PAN India
CSR Budget for the project: 54.82 cr.

PFC

The company has implemented its WASH program through the construction of toilets in the Government Schools of Andhra Pradesh under ‘Swach Bharat Abhiyan’ in collaboration with the state government and district administration.
Impact: The Company, through its collaboration with the state government, has built 3681 toilets in the government schools of Andhra Pradesh.


3. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited(ONGC)
ONGC is dedicated to excelling by leveraging competitive advantages by imbibing high standard of business ethics and organizational values. It is also committed to safety, health, and environment to enrich the quality of life for communities.
Project Name: Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan
Location: PAN India
CSR Budget for the project: 45.44 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 51.08 cr.

ONGC

The company, through its Swacch Bharat Initiative, has been instrumental in building toilets in schools across the country. The project was implemented through Sulabh International Social Service Organization in all the states except for Meghalaya, where it was implemented through state government. Also, ONGC has undertaken an initiative for making villages near ONGC operation area Open Defecation Free (ODF) by constructing Individual Household Latrines (IHHL).
Impact: 7958 school toilets have been built across the country through the company’s initiative along with 3540 IHHLs.


4. NTPC Ltd
The company is dedicated to providing reliable power and related solutions in an economical, efficient and friendly manner, driven by innovation and agility.
Project Name: Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan 
Location: PAN India
CSR Budget for the project: 35.73 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 45.09 cr.

NTPC

The company has invested its CSR funds in building toilets in schools across the country as well as individual houses to reduce open defecation. It has also generated awareness on the issue through its sensitizing programs in the community.
Impact: The Company has constructed 29000 toilets in 16000 schools covering 83 districts spread over 17 states.


5. Northern Coalfields Limited
Northern Coalfields is committed towards the development of the environment and social sustainability using best practices for mining and is committed to providing energy security to the country. It aims at production and marketing of planned quantities of coal and coal products and promoting them efficiently and economically, thus sustaining the quantity and protecting the environment.
Project Name: Swaksh Jal
Location: Madhya Pradesh (Singrauli), Uttar Pradesh (Sonebhadra, Bhadohi)
CSR Budget for the project: 32.46 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 32.46 cr.
The company has installed hand pumps in the villages near to its operation area to provide safe drinking water. It has also constructed ponds, check dams and deepened the already existing ponds in different villages around its operations area. It is also actively involved in Swacch Vidyalaya Abhiyan, a national campaign by the Government of India.
Impact: It has installed 460 hand pumps, created 1 pond and 2 check dams along with deepening 13 already existing ponds. It has constructed 6233 toilets in government schools of 12 districts of Madhya Pradesh through Hindustan Prefab Limited (A Govt. of India Unit) and Rajya Shiksha Kendra, Bhopal.


6. 
Hindustan Unilever Ltd.
Hindustan Unilever works towards making a sustainable living commonplace. It combines multinational expertise to provide a range of products to suit a variety of consumers. Thus, strengthening the existing relationships to bring in a significant change in the future growth.
Project Name: Swachh Aadat, Swachh Bharat
Location: PAN India
CSR Budget for the project: 27.42 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 27.42 cr.

Hindustan Unilever

The company’s ‘Swachh Aadat, Swachh Bharat’ (SASB) programme is in line with Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to promote good health and hygiene practices. In 2016, the programme continued to stress upon the need to adopt three simple good habits- ‘Swachh Aadat’: Washing hands five times a day, using a toilet for defecation and keeping it clean, and adopting safe drinking water practices.
Programs such as Swachhata Doot and Hand washing Behavior Change Program add on to their initiative.
Impact: The overall impact of the initiatives of the company under WASH program is that Company has successfully reached over 30 lakh people since its inception, reached to 63 million people in India for its Hand washing initiative and under DTA (Domex Toilet Academy) is able to train more than 500 micro-entrepreneurs since its inception.


7. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited.
Mahanadi Coalfields aims to produce and market the planned quality of coal and coal products efficiently and economically, in an eco-friendly manner with due regard to safety, conservation, and quality.
Project Name: Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan      
Location: Odisha (Angul, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Khurda, Bolangir, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Jajpur, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, Rayagada, Sonepur, Kandhamal)
CSR Budget for the project: 25.69 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 25.69 cr.
The company has taken various healthcare initiatives in rendering preventive health program, village health program and medical facility to peripheral villages on regular basis, under Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan. It took up the dream project of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India by undertaking the construction of school toilets in the State of Odisha.
Impact: It has constructed 10,546 toilets in the schools of various districts of Odisha.


8. 
Maruti Suzuki India Limited.
The CSR programs of Maruti Suzuki help to tackle social issues at both local and national level in order to develop scalable, impactful and sustainable social programs that leave a visible impact on the future generations.
Project Name: Water and Sanitation Initiative
Location: Haryana (Gurugram, Rohtak), Gujarat (Ahmedabad), Karnataka (Bengaluru)
CSR Budget for the project: 14.98 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 14.98 cr.
The Company has a dedicated team working with communities, sarpanches and ward members to improve the water and sanitation condition in their villages. The involvement of the community heads in the programs ensures sustainability and effectiveness in implementation. The programs are aligned with the Government’s flagship programs – Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Impact: The initiative has helped in improving the health and sanitation condition of the villages where it has been implemented.


9. Eastern Coalfields Limited.
Eastern Coalfields aims to emerge as a global player in the primary energy sector, committed to providing energy security to the country by attaining environmentally and socially sustainable growth through best practices from the mine to the market.
Project Name: Swachh Bharat Abjiyan
Location:  West Bengal (Paschim Bardhaman)
CSR Budget for the project: 12.13 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 14.54 cr.
The Company has spent the CSR fund for providing safe drinking water supply, installation of solar pump, open well, and deep bore well and for constructing and repairing toilets under SVA. ECL has always given special attention for the improvement of potable water supply to the occupants of our residential houses as well as to the people of nearby communities.
Impact: ECL has helped in improving the sanitation facilities in schools as well as installing 5 sets of pressure filter and electro chlorinators with 30000 Gallons per hour capacity to supply drinking water in the various area of ECL.


10. Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited.
Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited or HDFC is an Indian financial conglomerate based in Mumbai, India. It is a major provider of finance for housing in India. It also has a presence in banking, life and general insurance, asset management, venture capital and education loans. 
Project Name: Watershed Program
Location: Delhi (New Delhi), Maharashtra (Amravati, Beed, Latur, Palghar, Satara, Wardha, Yavatmal)
CSR Budget for the project: 11.91 cr.
Total Budget in WASH: 17.92 cr.
The project consists of the program for effective watershed management in water-deficient districts of rural Maharashtra and provision of clean and safe drinking water through community-based water centres and dispensing units in the slums of New Delhi. It is committed to the cause of improving sanitation facilities in both urban slums and rural villages. The programs are conducted by the company through community-led sessions/programs which shows the sustainability of the project. The Corporation has expanded its support to existing partner organizations having domain expertise and the ability to successfully complete projects on time.
Impact: The Company has supported sanitation program across multiple locations with the goal to build 3,000 household toilets over the next two year.
