On 5th February 2020, at India Impact Forum 2020, “CSR and SDGs in India”- a research report by CSRBOX presenting an in-depth analysis of CSR  spend of large companies in FY 2018-19 and how the CSR projects are aligned with the UN  Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) was launched. The report was launched in presence of Mrs. Sandra Shroff, Vice Chairman, UPL Ltd., Mr. Ronnie Screwvala, Founder, Swades Foundation, Mr. David J. Ranz, U.S. Consul General, Mumbai, Ms. Durga Shakti Nagpal, IAS, Deputy Secretary, Department of Commerce, Govt. of India, Mr. Praveen Pardeshi, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Ms. Jayanti Shukla, CEO, United Way Mumbai.

 

About the Report

“CSR and SDGs in India” is a research report by CSRBOX presenting an in-depth analysis of CSR  spend of large companies in FY 2018-19 and how the CSR projects are aligned with the UN  Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

The Companies selected in this report are short-listed based on the following criteria:

  • INR 0.5 Cr. of above prescribed CSR in FY 2018-19
  • Listed on BSE/NSE or a subsidiary of BSE-listed Company
  • Availability of the CSR data by 31st December 2019 and disclosures as per the Section 135 of the  Companies Act

  • No. of CSR Projects Implemented: 7780
  • Prescribed CSR Budget in FY 2018-19 (in INR Cr.): 11703
  • Actual CSR Spent in FY 2018-19 (in INR Cr.): 11713

Highlights of the Report

  • Quality Education (SDG 4) is the preferred SDG in terms of alignment of CSR projects with 28% of the total CSR Fund going towards education projects, followed by Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) and No Poverty (SDG 1) with 20% and 14% of the total CSR fund of FY 18-19 respectively.
  • Peace Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16), Sustainable Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and Life Below Water (SDG 14) are the least preferred SDGs with less than 1% of the total CSR Fund.
  • Out of the total CSR projects undertaken in Quality Education (SDG 4), indicator “Adjusted Net  Enrolment Ratio at Elementary (Class 1- 8) and Secondary (Class 9-10) school” accounts for 42.11%  followed by indicator “Average Annual Dropout rate at secondary level” at 33.78%.
  • Out of the total CSR projects undertaken in Good Health and well-being (SDG 3), indicator “Number of  governmental physicians, nurses and midwives per 1,00,000 population” accounts for 72.13%.
  • The Top 3 industry-sectors to spend in Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) are Metals, Mining &  Minerals (20.14%) followed by Computer Software/IT (15.97%) and Oil, Drilling, Lubricants &  Petrochemicals (14.56%).
  • The top 3 industry-sectors to spend in Quality Education (SDG 4) are Oil, Drilling, Lubricants &  Petrochemicals (26.32%) followed by Metals, Mining & Minerals (14.63%) and Computer Software/IT  (14.26%).
  • The number of CSR projects in aspirational districts has been the highest for Quality Education (SDG 4) covering 93 aspirational districts followed by Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6) and Good Health  and Well-Being (SDG 3) covering 74 and 87 aspirational districts respectively.
