With increased investment and interest from the corporate houses, the sector has seen significant development over the last few years. This article throws some light on the best initiatives undertaken by CSR in Education year in FY 2018-19.

1. Higher Education Programme

The company, through the Wipro Academy of Software Excellence program, helps science graduates to study for a Master's degree in Software Engineering. Run in partnership with the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, India, this unique program blends rigorous academic exposure with practical professional learning at the workplace. Since its inception in 1995, Wipro has supported and enabled more than 30,000 students to pursue their higher education in Engineering with India’s Premier Engineering Institutions under the programs WASE, WiSTA and WIMS. Over 18,200 students successfully completed their M.Tech degree in various IT disciplines over the last two decades. During FY 2019, the total number of new entrants into the three programs was 1,440 while the aggregate strength across four years was over 10,000.

2. Holistic Education Program

Tata Steel Limited's Thousand Schools Project, scholarships, Residential school program and Child education for particularly vulnerable tribal groups have been undertaken to provide holistic education support in the states of Jharkhand and Orissa.

The initiatives have impacted more than 1170 schools in Orissa and 248 schools in Jharkhand, provided more than 1,50,500 students.

4. International Automobile Centre of Excellence (i-ACE)

5. Zero Investment Innovations for Education Initiatives (ZIIEI)

Zero Investment Innovations for Education Initiatives (ZIIEI) program was launched at Jaipur, Rajasthan in the previous year and gained momentum in the year under review. The ‘Teaching The Teacher’ program (3T) seeks to transform education in government schools across India. It is a unique program that is committed to improving the skills of teachers, which in turn benefits the pupils. Under 3T, more than 15 lakh teachers across 21 states/union territories have been trained by inviting ideas from them and implementing the selected ideas in schools to improve the quality of education. It has potentially benefited more than 1.6 crore students indirectly and is being executed jointly with a leading non-governmental organization.

6. Lab on Bike

In partnership with Tata Trusts, TCS has set up science and mathematics laboratories in remote tribal areas of Odisha, to provide children access to quality education Mobile science labs housed in vans with GPS trackers, visit different blocks of Odisha to provide hands-on training in basic science.

8. The Primary Education Programme

The Primary Education Programme provides children from weaker sections of society in the Company’s factory catchments access to education with a focus on learning outcomes and retention. The program covered 1.15 lakh children during the year, thus taking the total coverage to around 6.91 lakh children. In addition, nearly 27,000 children were covered through support in teaching and learning material. 199 government primary schools were provided infrastructure support comprising boundary walls, additional classrooms, sanitation units, and furniture, taking the total number of government primary schools covered to date to 1,802.

They also supported the above initiatives with renovation, painting and necessary furniture along with basic resources like school bags, stationery, and books. Under this initiative, the Company also set up solar power plants, built libraries, science and computer laboratories in several schools. These have helped in increasing the attendance of students as well as teachers.
