UltraTech Cement brings in development through its ‘Model Villages’

India as a nation has been successful in pulling up a significant number of people below the poverty line. Unfortunately, there are still a large number of people living below the poverty line. This is a problem. There is the overwhelming challenge to improve the lives of the poor. UltraTech Cement, a part of the Aditya Birla Group cares for the underserved as an unwritten mandate, and has followed it generation after generation.

UltraTech Gujarat Cement was established in 1994, and ever since, they have been working with the nearby villages on different developmental aspects. Various activities had been planned and executed per its focus areas such as Education and Capacity Enhancement, Healthcare, Sustainable Livelihood, and Women Empowerment, Infrastructure Development and social empowerment. Three model villages are developed in line with its focus areas. The center being holistic and integral development of the village community, village panchayats, CBOs, SHGs, Schools, Government Department, and NGOs.

Bhanukumar Panchal, Vice President HR, says - ‘Development can only come when we are together with the community, government agencies, unions, volunteers and others who believe in the CSR the way we do.’

The project has given schools necessary infrastructure and has fulfilled other requirements like text books, digital interactive classrooms, teachers and drinking water facilities. 14750 students have been covered under education initiative through ‘Project Utthan’, ‘Navodaya’ and ‘Techno Gyan’. A concept of green school has also been introduced to make children appreciate and value environment and ecology.

Health facilities are being provided to 79683 people who have been reached through Health for All. Under this project, facilities like Mobile Medical Vans, Eye camp, Ayurveda camp, adolescent health awareness, school health project, and pulse polio drug were made available to the villagers.

Several water conservation initiatives were undertaken in the villages through pond deepening, check dam and river basin desilting. This has increased the water holding capacity by 15 lacs cubic meter. VRTI has been a constant partner for implementing various water conservation and livelihood interventions.

Various livelihood generation activities have been initiated which has increased the family income of the beneficiaries and is helping them lead comfortable lives. Training is provided in activities like – Handicraft, Tailoring, Dress designing, etc.

Ms. Jaya, Beneficiary, Village Kovaya says, - ‘ UltraTech has provided us with handicraft training for employment. It is good for us and we all women together works in this project and earning is also good in this work.’

The company also partnered with BAIF for livestock development and management. Organic farming and community biogas plants are some of the other features of the model villages. The farmers from the model villages are introduced to coconut plantation and through this; a coconut cluster is developed. This turned out to be quite profitable for farmers. They have also collaborated with NABARD. The youth of the village were trained in various skills such as carpentry, welding, fabrication and computer courses to help them in developing their skills and generate employment.
