Thinkerbell Labs is an e-learning company for the visually impaired, building smart class solutions to help increase Braille literacy rates.
Braille, the tactile script for reading and writing is fundamental to their literacy, employability and independence. However, the braille literacy rate in India is less than 1%. India has the most visually impaired people in the world. The total annual economic burden due to visually impaired in India is estimated at USD 77 billion of which USD 22 billion is due to child blindness. Braille literacy and education are instruments which drastically enhance the chances of gainful employment for a visually impaired person.
We tackle this problem via smart class solutions revolving around our flagship innovation, Annie. Annie, the world’s first braille literacy device, helps the visually impaired learn to read, write and type in braille, on their own, through audio-guided gamified content. The interactive content on Annie is designed to keep the student engaged through lessons, games and challenges built in partnership with braille experts. The braille literacy ecosystem also includes a companion app for the guardian/teacher to create content on their own, schedule tests/homeworks and download curated content, and an analytics dashboard to monitor a student or a class’s progress.
How our Tech works?
Our flagship innovation, Annie, can be used directly by CYP (children and young people with Visual Impairment) to learn Braille on their own and be monitored by teachers or parents. The technology will enable self learning (which is completely missing in today’s methods), enable efficient classroom teaching akin to mainstream classrooms, introduce collective and competitive learning, ease homework delivery and evaluation, and bring in easy tracking of progress.

Name of the Project: Annie Smart Class
Braille, the tactile script for reading and writing is fundamental to their literacy, employability and independence. However, the braille literacy rate in India is less than 1%.
The current issues resulting in the abysmal Braille literacy rates are:
The Annie Smart Class is a smart class solution centred around the Braille literacy device Annie, and enables efficient classroom teaching of Braille for the visually impaired. Similar to a language lab or a computer lab, an Annie smart class brings in self-learning and collaborative learning for the children while increasing the impact and efficiency of a teacher. The smaller Smart class setups (called Gurukuls) are focused towards resource centers and inclusive education setups catering to a lesser number of Visually Impaired children. Being a connected setup, the children are able to access the latest quality content, while the teachers/parents can track performance and usage metrics of the children to effectively monitor progress.
Thinkerbell Labs is an e-learning company for the visually impaired, building smart class solutions to help increase Braille literacy rates. We have built the world’s first Braille literacy device that helps a visually impaired person learn to read, write, and type in Braille on their own.
Braille, the tactile script for reading and writing is fundamental to their literacy, employability and independence. However, the braille literacy rate in India is less than 1%. This is an alarming statistic given that India has the most visually impaired people in the world.
We are working towards smart solutions to increase efficiency of Braille learning and to make education inclusive. By partnering with us, we can work together on building a stronger, more independent VI community, and a more inclusive society.
