EcoBio Traps is a for-profit social enterprise focused on the public health sector that introduced a unique innovation: the world's first passive green device, a patented innovation, scientifically proven, and cleverly designed to mimic a breeding ground for female mosquitoes. EcoBiotraps are being developed as an alternative support to conventional vector management methods. These traps are inexpensive and biodegradable lethal ovitraps that have an advantage of a simple method “set it and forget it” approach to integrated vector management by just adding water to the trap. They are made from 100% recycled cardboard that has a bio-based additive that allows them to hold water for 4-6 weeks.
Eco Biotraps is an innovative product of EcoBio Group and it is the word's first passice device for vector control. The organisation was incorporated in 2019 and the biotraps since then have been piloted in Mumbai and Assam.
The goal was to make an ecofriendly and green product for vector control. This product is innovaitve made from recycled corrugated pulp and which targets source reduction of mosquitoes as vector control method. We have partnered with ICICI Foundation, ONGC Foundation, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to deploy the biotraps in community and have seen great results in vector control.
The product works on the principle of micmicking a breeding site and is equipped with an attractant and larvicide. When the female gravid mosquito is attracted to this biotrap, she lays her eggs here and the larvicide further prevents the eggs from hatching, if the eggs have hatched the larva do not turn into an adult owing to the IGR used.
It is the world's first green device for mosquito control targeting source reduction. It is made from recycled corrugated pulp and is completely biodegradable. The device is patented in 50+ countires. It is an ovitrap which attracts the female gravid mosquito to breed in the biotrap as opposed to any other breeding site in the proximity owing to the attractant used. The eggs laid are then decapitated by the larvicide present in the same sachet. One biotrap works for 4-6 weeks and then it leaks itself out.
It is a product made on science and validated by scientists. It has a larger impact, a public health product helping in decreasing the risk of diseases like dengue, and malaria. It is very easy to use, just need to add water to the biotrap and leave it at a place away from direct sunlight.
Scientifically, pregnant women and children are more at risk of mosquito bites, hence this product would be a great fit for use at Anganwadis, schools, communities, healthcare faciltites, and at locations with activebreeding sites.
