About the organization

Registered in the year 2011 under the Societies Registration Act (SRA), 1860, SeSTA was conceived to put systematic effort into the socio-economic development of Northeastern states by enhancing the capabilities of poor communities, promoting and strengthening their institutions to facilitate them out of poverty. Currently, SeSTA works with 71,270 families in 2021 villages spread across 22 districts in three states - Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura.

With an approach that involves collectivizing women from marginalized communities to enhance their capabilities, SeSTA has strengthened the livelihood system of more than 1 lakh women farmers. Also, the organization’s scientific agriculture interventions in food and vegetable crops and intensification of the diversification of other livelihood practices like piggery, goat rearing, fisheries, mushroom cultivation, and solar power-driven initiatives have been helping communities to lead economically self-sufficient lives.SeSTA, with the help of the community and its professionals working on the ground, has strengthened the Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Village Organizations (VOs), Producer Groups (PGs), and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) which have, in turn, impacted the lives of over 200,000 economically and socially deprived people in the villages.

The organization follows the principles of Integrated Natural Resources Management (INRM) for optimal utilization of resources. One of the key focuses over the decade has been the promotion of a market-centric Agri-economy. Another key strategic approach since 2015 has been individual asset creation under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). This is coupled with creating access to entitlements for poor families under various government schemes.SeSTA is also the technical support partner for State Rural Livelihoods Mission in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram apart from being a direct engagement partner in Assam and Tripura. The organization has been supported on projects by renowned agencies in the development space in India including Tata Trusts, APPI, Indigo, NABARD, and the UN.
