About The Organization

Janani, an affiliate of DKT International, is a registered not for profit society implementing a Family Planning and Comprehensive Abortion Care program in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. So far Janani has provided Family Planning cover to over 30 million couples to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies through contraceptive products and services. And preventing nearly 8.2 million unwanted pregnancies and 13,000 maternal deaths. Janani is an innovative and adventurous social marketing NGO that promotes family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention, safe abortion and improves people’s lives.

Janani delivers services through its own clinics, franchise clinics, conducting outreach family planning camps and through social marketing of contraceptives. Janani provides comprehensive Family Planning and Safe-Abortion services through 23 Surya clinics across 3 States and Social Marketing of Contraceptive Products across 20 States of India.

With a prime objective of supplementing the efforts of the government in scale and impact Janani has established a unique model that uses alternative channels of service delivery in low-resource settings. The programme was primarily established with an initiative of Janani in the field of family planning in Bihar. The project also has under its gamut, issues concerning reproductive health.

The programme aims to extend the traditional social marketing structure through other private sector channels that even exist beyond the market place. This approach has facilitated Janani to reach into the rural market through the programme network. This initiative has been under implementation since 1996 and restricted to the eastern state of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh and now the programme has further been extended to other largest and populous state of India.

Sole objective of this initiative is to make available the entire range of family planning services with most optimum levels of cost efficiency to the people, especially, the poor and the most vulnerable. In order to achieve this goal, the programme attempts to induce partnership between the private and public sectors so that the large and underutilised expertise in the public sector can be used on a private sector platform. As regards service delivery it aims at providing both clinical and non-clinical services in the area of family planning and reproductive health.

The whole process has diverted into three distinct and mutually consisting channels of service delivery. They are:
Surya Clinics – a franchisee network of qualified providers that provide clinical services.
Outreach to conduct Family Planning camps at Primary Health Centre. A team of trained providers from a district travels to health centres or dispensaries to provide FP services on a single day or over a few days.
Network of shops that stock and sell condoms and oral contraceptives

Why Should A Corporate Partner With Organization?

India has the distinction of being the first country in the world to start an official family planning program. Despite this accomplishment, there is still significant unmet need for both spacing and limiting births among currently married women who continue to face obstacles in obtaining the services they need.  Public sector programs alone have not been successful in providing contraceptive choice in India. While the effectiveness of the private sector in providing quality reproductive health services is yet to be fully realized, its potential to play a significant role in addressing unmet need. The population Janani serves are young couple, poor, less educated, and who live in rural areas have more difficulty meeting their family planning needs with rich experience of 24 years in providing clinical family planning services through its own 22 operational “Surya Clinic” and Outreach Family Planning Services at Govt. Health premises; and does contraceptive social marketing across 20 states of India. In past 24 years of experience in Bihar, DKT’s Janani has an established program that delivers results. Since 1996, Janani has provided over 30 million CYPs and contributed an estimated 25% of all contraceptive prevalence in Bihar. Janani provides approximately 50% of all condoms, oral and injectable contraceptives, and IUDs.
