About The Organization

WaterAid India is part of the global WaterAid federation, which has been working for four decades, with a mission to transform the lives of the poorest and most marginalized people by improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Our vision is a world where everyone everywhere has safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

WaterAid India has a goal to “Make WASH poverty a history in the country”. To achieve this, WaterAid engage in the areas with the greatest concentration of excluded and marginalised communities and empower and include them in local decision making, help revive and strengthen the local governance institutions and influence those responsible for delivering the basic WASH services

Since it commenced operations in the country in 1986, WaterAid India has demonstrated scalable models of integrated Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).  WaterAid India is registered as Jal Seva Charitable Foundation in the country - a not for profit company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956.  WaterAid India through its teams in four regional offices works in 11 states across India with partners to transform millions of lives every year. Presently, WaterAid India directly intervenes in 24 districts and 4 towns/cities.

WaterAid support the central government programmes like Swachh Bharat Mission and National Rural Drinking Water Programme and try to ensure that they enshrine principles of quality, equity, inclusion and sustainability, the foundation of all WaterAid’s programmes. WaterAid monitor the effectiveness of WASH service delivery, advocate for the essential role of safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation in human development particularly in health, nutrition, and education. WaterAid India facilitates and fosters an enabling environment for collaboration, convergence, learning and growth.

Our key interventions are in schools, with women’s groups, in Anganwadi (ICDS) healthcare centers and with institutions of self-governance in village or slums. Through our intervention in the year 2015-16, we reached 6,03,716 people with water, 11,71,524 people with sanitation and 16,35,023 people with hygiene in our intervention.

In India currently, we directly intervene in 43 districts, and 14 towns/cities across 11 states. In the year 2015-16 we reached 7,03,925 people with water, 11,23,180 people with sanitation and 18,87,253 people with hygiene.
