About the organization
Affected by the plight of children begging and peddling wares at busy traffic junctions on the roads of Delhi and even more shocked by the standard of education in Delhi, the Founder, Geeta Dharmarajan set up Katha to bring big ideas about health, society and environment to enhance the joy of reading. Income generation activities for the women in the community were initiated to enable the mother to send the children to school. With a focus on the girl child, to enable the elder girl child to attend school instead of taking care of her siblings at home, a crèche was created in the school to take care of the siblings. Founded in 1989, Katha has been, for the last 32 years, empowering underserved and marginalized communities through quality education, vocational skilling & entrepreneurship training, women wmpowerment, WASH, world-class book publishing and teacher training. Katha has several programs in place to help check various types of poverties amongst the population at the Bottom of Pyramid’ (BoP). Katha’s initiatives, across many states, have reached over 10.4 million beneficiaries (children, youth and women) from impoverished and underserved communities. Katha’s work spans the literacy to literature continuum by seamlessly connecting grassroots work in education & training and community resurgence. Katha works in the underserved and impoverished communities to ensure these children are able to receive the quality of education and skill based training, needed to build a better future for themselves and their families. They have an innovative, proven education model that makes learning a fun, creative experience for children, youth, women and teachers alike.
Vision: Katha is built on the vision that children can be agents of positive socio-cultural change.
Mission: Katha’s mission is to empower socio-economically disadvantaged children as they read for joy and meaning. Children, via Katha’s StoryPedagogyTM engage with “Big Ideas” through high-quality reading content, which fosters their critical thinking and problem-solving skills so that they can go on to create a kinder, and more equitable, and sustainable world for all.
Katha’s expertise has been its engaging teaching-learning content and its unique and innovative StoryPedagogy© that has been tested, refined and replicated in thousands of low cost schools across geographies of India. Stories and storybooks are the core of all educational and training programs that brings excitement among learners. Katha’s expertise comes from the vast experience in running low cost schools through storybooks and the StoryPedagogy, bringing first generation learners in government schools into grade level reading-numeracy and empowering community women and youth to become agents of sustainable change.
