About the organization

Environmental Synergies in Development (ENSYDE) is an organization that strives to reduce the environmental footprint of organizations, establishments, and institutions in India. They design and implement solutions that promote the efficient use of resources like energy, water, and waste.

The environment being their foremost beneficiary, they strongly believe in breaking barriers to environmental sustainability through awareness, experiential learning, and behavioral change.

Through programs like bE-RESPONSIBLE, Prescription for Change, Regeneratree, Planeteers, ENSYDE has introduced long-term solutions to tackle issues related to sustainable development and climate change. To promote this movement and spread awareness, they have reached, interacted, and educated over 14,00,000 citizens since 2016 including 30,000 in the last year alone.

The world today generates roughly 50 million tonnes of e-waste per year. This figure is expected to rise to 120 million by the year 2050. India being the fastest-growing e-waste generator, contributes to approximately 5 million tonnes per year. Globally only 20% is formally recycled with the remaining 80% either ending up in landfills or handled by the informal sector - in India, this is closer to 95%.

The consequences of improper e-waste disposal in landfills or other non-dumping sites pose serious threats to public health and can pollute ecosystems for generations to come. When electronics are improperly disposed of and end up in landfills, toxic chemicals are released, impacting the earth’s air, soil, water, and ultimately, human health. To address this issue head-on, ENSYDE in association with Saahas developed the ‘bE-Responsible’ initiative in 2016. The project was designed to focus on the responsible disposal of e-waste across public and private establishments. Click here to know more.

Through 355 campaigns conducted, they have been able to collect 107 tonnes of e-waste and divert 620.78 tonnes of toxic metal from landfills. This has resulted in a reduction of 30,132.55 kgs of carbon emission. Through online campaigns, they have been able to reach over 13 lakh citizens and spread information and awareness about the initiative as of February 2021. Let’s work together to eliminate e-waste. Waste: Currently we are working on 2 programmes - e-waste management (bE-Responsible Initiative and expired/unused medication management (Be the Prescription for Change Initiative. These streams of waste generated in households are currently being disposed along with municipal solid waste resulting in extensive environmental damage.

Special features of the organization

ENSYDE's programs are designed and implemented focusing on Environment as the primary beneficiary. Their programs focus on the following areas:

  • Responsible waste management solutions
  • Energy solutions to reduce carbon emissions
  • Educating children - our future change-makers - in topics relating to sustaining the environment
  • Efficient utilization of available water resources

All of ENSYDE's initiatives and programs focus on positive influence on individuals and communities to make them the guardians of their environment. They do this through systematic awareness programs using a variety of mediums like - door-to-door initiatives, engagement with resident welfare organizations, schools, colleges, innovative skits, social media promotions - any medium that works for that community. As awareness increases, they enable individuals and communities to act upon the environmental issue at hand by designing and implementing solutions on the ground.

For instance, through their awareness programs, they educate communities to understand the importance of responsible e-waste management and the potential implications on the environment. They don't merely stop at awareness generation but also present an effective solution that enables communities to take responsible actions. They have designed an efficient e-waste collection system that allows them to responsibly dispose of their e-waste - thereby completing the loop and creating more responsible communities.

Why should a corporate partner with organization?

Though their organization and corporates differ in their very nature of knowledge, expertise, and capacities, what is complementary is their mutual goal of sustainable development. They, at ENSYDE, are keen on purposeful partnerships with companies and institutions willing to leverage their strengths and prowess to tackle environmental issues like - waste, water, and air pollution. Their programs focus on engaging local communities that can provide corporates with a platform to truly demonstrate their commitment to environmental development and sustainability.

ENSYDE's solutions are end-to-end encompassing awareness, system improvements, and innovations, long-term engagement, entrepreneurship, behavioral change, etc., thereby making programs replicable and scaleable. Corporates can come on board and lend support for multi-year initiatives with measurable impacts. A long-term partnership can improve the social and environmental impact of the business and also help in finding new market opportunities.

We are keen to partner with those corporates who are intent on leveraging their strengths to help India minimize its contribution to climate change

Since our programs focus a lot of community engagements, it would be a great platform for corporates to demonstrate to local communities their commitment to environmental sustainability while at the same time improving their visibility and reach in those local communities that would benefit their businesses.

Our programs are built for scale and hence are long term, provide corporates with an opportunity to support multi-year initiatives with measurable impacts year on year. At the same time, we are keen to find support for proof of pilots that need nurturing before scaling.
