About the organization
The tragic news of a differently abled 13-year-old girl shackled and confined to her dingy room almost all day for her safety; while her mother, a daily wage laborer was out working led to the inception of Satya Special School in 2003. This is not an isolated incident, it sadly mirrors the condition of many differently abled children and adults across India, and people with disabilities are the most ignored section of our society today.
Fueled by the desire to reach the unreached, Satya was set up to serve as an integrated center for disability rehabilitation in Puducherry. Apart from providing free and quality rehabilitation services to the underprivileged, Satya has been working tirelessly toward making children with special needs (CWSN) as self-sufficient as possible in order to alleviate the social stigma that is prevalent among the public at large.
Satya also runs a New Born High Risk clinic at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) where at-risk children susceptible to developmental delay are identified. This is the only such facility in this part of the world. In the last two years more than 2500 new-born babies have been identified out of which 50% have been provided rehabilitation and counselling services. All of Satya’s services are free for children from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. About 75% of Satya’s residents come from BPL families.
