About the organization
LEPRA Society is a non-governmental organisation that promotes quality health care, initiates and fosters new developments and implementation. The Society aims to support the National Health Programmes in the prevention and control of diseases such as Leprosy, Lymphatic Filariasis and other neglected diseases. The Society focuses health improvement activities in the community that are marginalised or poor, especially women and children, young people, slum populations and migrants affected by the above mentioned diseases and tries to bring about positive changes in their life-style. The work in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand states targets a population of nearly 12 million people.
Vision of LEPRA Society is to be a leader in reducing the incidence and impact of leprosy and other neglected diseases.
Initially LEPRA Society worked mainly with the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) of the Indian Government for treating the disease. It continues to support the NLEP in addition to its work in rehabilitation and succor to those afflicted patients who are more often than not from the most marginalized sections of society.
In addition to our work with TB and HIV/AIDS, LEPRA Society also works with malaria and disabilities arising from diseases other than leprosy. We are involved in the implementation of the government’s National Anti-Malaria Programme (NAMP) and do extensive work with eye care and prevention of needless blindness.
LEPRA Society has had large part to play in the research surrounding leprosy in the areas of both treatment and transmission. Their overarching goal is to create awareness among stakeholders and the general public, and to address the painful discrimination faced by those who have suffered this disease, especially women, at the hands of both the law and ignorant societal attitudes.
