About the organization

DEVI Sansthan (Dignity, Education, Vision International) is an innovative not-for-profit educational organization that offers highly effective, evidence-based, low-cost, replicable and scalable solutions to problems of literacy and school education. Since its inception in 1992, the projects of the organization have aimed to create a sustainable positive impact in the education, skills, health and incomes of underprivileged people in communities across India. It was established in the city of Lucknow under the leadership of Dr. Sunita Gandhi, a globally renowned educationist. The organization’s work has been recognized and appreciated by important personalities including the Chief Minister and Governor of Uttar Pradesh. The organization has also been covered by several media platforms including the Times of India, Hindustan Times etc. Several governments, foundations and bilateral government agencies have supported the work of the organization.

DEVI Sansthan’s flagship project ‘Global Dream’ was launched in 2014 and aims to achieve Universal Foundational Literacy and Numeracy through a People’s Movement. The project is based on the belief that India’s Foundational Literacy Crisis cannot be solved by school teachers alone and a solution is possible only if all stakeholders of our society take action to solve the problem in a time-bound manner. To achieve this, the Global Dream project has developed and piloted a literacy toolkit (available in 13 languages) and methodology, after 14 years of international research, that can make a child or adult literate in 30 hours! Most importantly, the pilots have demonstrated that the Global Dream toolkit can be used by any literate child or adult to teach another illiterate person with little or no training and make another person literate in less time. Going forward, DEVI Sansthan aims to scale up the Global Dream project in India and abroad in collaboration with governments, schools, colleges and universities, corporations, CSRs and individual volunteers. The One World Literacy Campaign is also being launched on International Women's Day 2021 to mobilize widespread action by organizations and individuals across the world to remove illiteracy in mission mode.

DEVI Sansthan is also implementing 3 other projects offering holistic solutions to learners, teachers and schools. These include:

  • ‘Power of One’ School project in which 1 teacher learning centers offer alternative education to out of school children and help them get mainstreamed into school education
  • ‘Sumpoorn Nayi Shiksha’ or SNS Education project that provides a holistic curriculum in non-formal and government school settings to develop children intellectually, spiritually and morally
  • ‘Large-scale Government Schools Teacher Training and Student Assessment’ project for government school teachers for their holistic professional development and assessment requirements.

Special features of the organization

  • Effective and Time-bound: All the projects of the organization aim to achieve their aimed impact quickly within a given time period.
  • Zero, Near Zero and Low-Cost interventions: The organization has piloted various low-cost but effective implementation models for its projects that can also be made zero and near-zero cost per learner.
  • Evidence-Based Intervention: The organization believes that showing significant and quick improvements in teaching-learning outcomes highly encourages both the instructor and the learner. Hence, all their projects equip the stakeholders with evaluation tools and methods that give feedback at a micro-level. At a large scale, the design of their interventions enables them to conduct impact evaluations that give them insights that are used to improve and achieve their goals and objectives efficiently.
  • Replicable and Scalable: The projects can easily be customized and implemented by diverse stakeholders including governments, schools, corporates, NGOs and individual volunteers in a variety of settings including schools, offices, communities, homes or any other location. Scalable models in these settings have been developed and consolidated, ready to be scaled up with confidence.
