About the organization

Million Sparks Foundation is a non-profit where we are building a collaborative mobile application platform with an objective to provide lifelong learning to teachers impacting the capacity of 10 Million teachers and school leaders and via them impact the life and learning outcomes of 300 Million Children by 2025. Our initial work was supported by Google.org, Central Square Foundation, and Gray Matters Capital. Million Sparks Foundation enables lifelong learning and capacity building of teachers at scale using the Mobile App platform ChalkLit.It provides curriculum-aligned content in multiple languages in the form of lesson plans and annual plans, training for teachers on both scholastic and co-scholastic topics and also enables a personalized peer-to-peer social microlearning network. We have trained 220K+ teachers on the platform impacting 14M+ children across 6 states namely, Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. Our product and content strategy has matured over the years and works at scale. We focus to provide comprehensive capacity building inputs to teachers through-

  1. Long term skill building through deep conceptual and pedagogical training that is offered by the state as mandated training
  2. Short term improvements in class delivery by providing enhanced lesson plans and annual plans for  teacher's tactical need of delivering a great next class
  3. A personalised peer-to-peer micro-learning community and infrastructure that provides a daily dose of short bite-sized content that includes teacher best practises, education news, conceptual and pedagogical inputs, interesting activities, videos, teaching-learning material that teachers can consume in a few minutes and make their classroom interesting and relevant.

While we are strongly focused on scholastics we are also equally focused on promoting Sustainable Development Goals through education for sustainability, problem-solving, critical thinking, and life-skills. We enable state education departments and other partnered NGOs/ training organizations to run their official teachers training programs in a completely online or blended mode, and provide detailed usage analytics and user insights. MSF has developed comprehensive communications, tools, and processes to ensure high completion rates of the training offered to teachers. Some NGOs including Pratham, Pratham Books- StoryWeaver, STIR Education, Lend A Hand, Akshara Foundation, Educate Girls are working with us to scale their programs and augment their digital strategic approach. United Nations Environment Programme is also partnering with us for educating teachers and students on sustainability and environment education awareness through training and national level competitions.

There has been an independent research study conducted by the Delhi State Council of Education Research and Training, with support from Indian Statistical Institute, and the National Council of Education Research and training which has evaluated and found the intervention extremely effective to improve the classroom practise and pedagogical knowledge of teachers. JPAL is initiating an RCT (randomized Controlled Trial) to study the program efficacy and the research design is nearly complete.

Special features of the organization

  • Our key differentiation is our platform approach with a comprehensive backend that also allows other entities to upload their multifarious content, run their programs and analytics.
  • Delivering training primarily through a mobile application allows MSF to onboard new teachers at extremely low marginal cost and rely on the network effect to increase its reach exponentially allowing scaling non-linearly.
  • We have developed a generic 11 point content framework that we populate through partnerships and aggregation of both scholastic and co-scholastic content from the internet, state education bodies, NGOs, and content partners.
  • We maintain a deep focus on the completion rates of trainings and combine our product offering with services, automation and processes to ensure higher completion rates to the tune of 85%-90% (global MOOC completion rates being 3-7% ).
  • We are building an open collaborative platform and enable several other NGOs to bring their content and programs on ChalkLit to help them scale further in completely online and blended modes.
  • MSF combines three interventions to drive capacity building at scale, thereby targeting both short-term improvements in pedagogy and lesson planning, and long-term skill-building among teachers through deep pedagogical training and building a community-driven continuous learning infrastructure.
  • Our team is led by a team of experienced and skilled professionals. The founders Dr. Abhinav Mathur and Dr. Mona Mathur have 27 years of experience each and are both PhDs from IIT Delhi with PhDs in Computer Science and Telecommunication, and Machine Learning and Neurosciences respectively. They had long corporate careers where they have lead large teams which delivered large scalable solutions in areas that include mobility, mobile apps, healthcare, education, entertainment and finance.

Why should a corporate partner with organization?

A corporate should consider partnering with us owing to the following reasons-

  1. We allow for reaching all our users in a personalized manner and gather evidence of usage and impact at both macro and micro levels. Integration with technology allows quicker feedback collection and being more agile to respond to user queries and suggestions.
  2. We have experience working with the Government projects and initiatives and have evolved our processes to help integrate seamlessly with the Government infrastructure for capacity building projects.
  3. Using a technology platform allows infinite scaling with a low marginal cost of user onboarding, this helps to deploy and continuously support programs at scale. This is beneficial for donor organizations as well as government agencies that need to monitor their programs continuously.
  4. We enable a collaborative model of operations for all stakeholders including state government, agencies, content development organizations, teachers, school leaders and other education workforce, through our mobile-based platform ChalkLit.
  5. Our focus is to provide comprehensive and continuous capacity building in both scholastic and co-scholastic areas including Sustainable Development Goals, for which we are already working with  UN agencies like UNEP and UNICEF.
