About the organization

Sitapur Eye Hospital has been a leading Tertiary care eye institute of Northern India since 1947. Established in 1927,it has been serving the people of India for more than 95 years. Founded by Dr. M.P. Mehray Padma Bhushan, Padma Shree Rai Sahib, Rai Bahadur DR BC Roy Awardee in a small town called Khairabad, where patients were served in small huts and tents. Later on it shifted to the present location in 1947. Sitapur Eye Hospital (SEH) serves more than 32 cities and towns in the states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Today the base hospital in Sitapur is a 500 bed facility and has more than 2000 beds amongst the rest of its 32 branches all over.

The hospital is equipped with world class facilities, equipment and instruments and continues to provide international quality eye care at the lowest price possible in India. At its nucleus center alone in Sitapur, it serves more than 200,000 patients every year and more than 400,000 patients between all its branches in the two states of UP and Uttrakhand. This is besides the various Camps that the hospital organizes for the poor & underprivileged in various villages and districts, in order to bring awareness and service for better Eye Health and its 20 Primary Eye Care Centres/Vision Centres across 08 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

 It has been a leading eye institute in India with a vision – “To eradicate and alleviate blindness with compassion”. Sitapur Eye Hospital is a Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (the only NGO run RIO in India, partly supported by Government of India) for Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery. It is also conducting post-doctoral Long term Fellowship In comprehensive Ophthalmology ,  Glaucoma and short term fellowships in Small Incision Cataract Surgery, Phacoemulsification, and ocular diagnostics. All super specialties like Vitreoretinal Surgery, Cornea & Eye Bank, Oculoplasty, Uvea & Medical Retina, Pediatric Ophthalmology & Squint, Low vision Aids, Ocularistry are functioning very effectively. For Paramedical training SEH is running Bachelor in Optometry, Diploma in Allied Ophthalmic Personnel, Mid Level Ophthalmic Personnel courses & short term courses in orthoptics, glaucoma and retina imaging and Low Vision Aids. Para-medical with specialist surgeons, trained and practiced in individual specializations, latest equipment, supporting infrastructure and facilities spread with huge area of land.

In its quest for eliminating needless blindness, Sitapur Eye Hospital (SEH) partners with both governmental and non-governmental agencies from the beginning. Sitapur has forged a formal relationship with the National Program of Control of Blindness (NPCB); at the district & state level. Sitapur Eye Hospital closely works with Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), Pradhaan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojna (PM-JAY) and District Blindness Control Society (DBCS) in terms of service delivery through outreach camps; In addition to this, SEH has been closely working with International NGOs.

Special features of the organization

  • Comprehensive Eye Care services in hospital such as: Refractive Error, Cataract, Retina, Uvea, Glaucoma, Cornea, Orbit & Oculoplasty, Pediatrics with Vision Therapy, Orthoptics, Low Vision, Contact Lens & rehabilitation Centre, Laboratory, Eye Bank
  • Ancillary Services within hospital for patients such as: Medical Store, Optical Store, Guest House for patients, Transport for Outreach Patients, Food Court, Wheel Chairs
  • Community Outreach Camps: Hospital is conducting community outreach camps to serve needy patients at their door steps through its vast network of community volunteers and local partners. 65-75% patients are treated free of cost through camps.
  • Primary Eye Care Centres/Vision Centres : 20 Vision Centers located in 08 districts of Uttar Pradesh serving rural communities with comprehensive screening and glasses dispensing. We have screened 46,400 patients through vision centers, refracted 10,302 patients and provided subsidized spectacles to 5,876 patients. Out of 2,660 patients referred from vision centers; 1,649 reported in base hospital in FY 2021-22.
  • School Screening & Awareness Programs : Hospital is conducting school screenings and providing free of cost spectacles to the children in 02 districts (Sitapur & Lakhimpur) of Uttar Pradesh. We conduct awareness events such as school awareness events on eye diseases & eye donation, magic shows for awareness in children & community on eye care health.
  • Workshops & Training/Meeting of Government/Non Government Clinical/Non-Clinical Staff: Training of grass root level workers such AWWs/ASHAs for early identification of eye patients and refer them to nearest available quality eye care facility and doing workshop with community level volunteers cum sponsors of camp, training for skill development of ophthalmic staff of government (Posted/RBSK), Meeting with government officials, NGOs & CBOs, private partners, PRI members in 07 districts of UP.
  • Celebration of  National & International days: such as Low Vision Awareness month, World hypertension day, International Women’s Day, Glaucoma Week, Eye Donation fortnight, World Sight Day etc.
