About the organization

The Brooke is an international animal welfare charity that works to improve the lives of horses, donkeys, and mules and the poor marginalized community that owns them. Founded by Dorothy Brooke, in 1934, in Cairo, to provide free veterinary care to war horses abandoned after World War-I, it then expanded its operations to 11 countries, across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Today Brooke reaches out to more than two million working horses, donkeys, mules, and the marginalized communities that own them.

Brooke Hospital for Animals (India) or Brooke India (BI), is an affiliate of The Brooke. It is a Section 8, Not for Profit Limited by Guarantee Company, and is registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India. BI has been working since 2000, to improve the lives of vulnerable working equids and communities in some of the country’s most challenging areas. We now operate directly through 32 Equine Welfare Projects (EWPs) across 10 States in India, thereby reaching out to approximately 2.21 lakh working equids and the equine-owning community that owns/rears them.

Our Vision is of a world in which working horses, donkeys, and mules are free from suffering
and have a life worth living.
Our Mission is to achieve immediate and lasting change in the lives of working horses, donkeys,
and mules and the communities that depend on them.
Our Goals: “We are proud to be Brooke. We are resourceful, share new ideas and help each
other succeed. Together we make change happen”. Over the next few years, we want to reach
and improve the lives of more animals and their communities than ever before – and we’re
focused on three goals that we believe can get us there.

Special features of the organization

  • We work through multidisciplinary teams in thematic areas like animal Health & Welfare, Community development through Behaviour Change, Livelihoods & Resilience, , Advocacy, and Infomation & Communication Technologies.
  • We work on the sustainable model of strengthening equine healthcare infrastructure and capabilities of equine owners and Local Service Providers (LSP).
  • We aim to strengthen the economic and social conditions of the marginalized equine-owning communities
  • The concept is to build up Community-Based Organisations that can sustain the work after BI’s exit from an operational area. These comprise Self Help Groups called Equine Welfare Groups/Associations/ Federations and the capacity building of LSP, and linking them to Govt resources in the Animal Husbandry and Rural Development departments amongst others.
  • BI has a Planning and Performance team that formulates the projects for implementation through Project Cycle Management and a MEAL-led performance team which monitors progress and gathers evidence of the programmatic impact.
  • The Funds and Communication and External affairs teams support Information Communication Technology led dissemination of work and working with the Govt in positive policy initiatives and change.
