Project Description

The Crafts sector is considered the second largest employer after agriculture with an estimated 35 million artisans and craftsmen earning their livelihood through this. Most of these artisans work independently and have limited institutional support which minimizes their efficiency and production capacity. Due to lack of access to professional inputs, supply chain, operational skills and market linkages which makes this source of livelihood economically unviable, around 10% of the artisans shift to low skilled jobs every year.

Earthy Goods Foundation Society works with micro-enterprises, non-governmental organisations and individual artisans with the aim to preserve traditional livelihoods that still support a lot of formal and informal jobs in the rural regions. They also help check migration by making crafts an economically viable enterprise and thereby restore dignity to these talented groups' work.

With Axis Bank Foundation's support, a comprehensive crafts livelihood programme is being implemented through trainings and workshops on aggregation, product development and market linkages.

a) Aggregation involves collating details of artisans and their products, creating informal networks or collectives in local regions which help them take large orders and consolidate sources for raw materials and local service providers.

b) New products and signature lines are created for selected artisans after researching market needs and getting inputs from designers. Training are then held with the collective not just on creating these designs, maintaining quality, sourcing the raw materials but also on planning and pricing.

c) 24-hours visible online platform (www.indianartisansonline.com) and directory will have all details of the artisans and their products. This will help the artisans and buyers like corporate and retailers to interact directly with each other thereby increasing transparency in market linkages and reducing dependency on middlemen.
