National University Students' Skill Development Programme

Organization : The Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS)

Location : Bihar,Chhattisgarh,Gujarat,Jharkhand,Madhya Pradesh,Maharashtra,Odisha,Rajasthan,Uttar Pradesh

Project Description

TISS has taken up the challenge to demonstrate models on skilling people with varying educational qualifications (including illiterates whose skills have been rendered redundant in the new economic context). The Institute believes that the current framework that differentiates education (offered by schools and universities) and vocational skills (offered outside the school and University system) is not serving a large majority of the people, and those receive education from the formal system are not skilled enough to gain productive employment. The Institute has taken up this challenge to demonstrate models that focus on skilling people with varying educational qualifications (including illiterates-they are not without skills, but their skills have been rendered redundant in the new economic context).

National University Students' Skill Development (NUSSD) Programme, is a unique initiative on skill development designed and undertaken by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in collaboration with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to enable graduating youths from underprivileged background to acquire employment oriented skills while pursuing their graduation from the regional colleges. A Pan India programme which was initiated in August 2013 on pilot basis was implemented in 34 colleges of 11 universities from 9 Indian states. Initially the programme was started with increasing the employability of National Service Scheme (NSS) students. Afterwards it was realized that NUSSD has enormous potential to strengthen knowledge, skills and capabilities of all students through its cutting edge pedagogy, learning materials and community work component that brings about sustainable social change in key Social and Economic Development areas; TISS decided to make it open for all graduating students from these colleges. NUSSD programme involves college students’ engagement over three years in a multi stakeholder collaborative model involving universities, colleges, corporate, industry and NGOs.

Participating Universities in the Pilot Phase

  1. Agra University (Agra, Uttar Pradesh)
  2. Hemachandracharya North Gujarat University (Patan, Gujarat)
  3. J.N.V. University (Jodhpur, Rajasthan)
  4. Kohan University (Chaibasa, Jharkhand)
  5. Magadh University (Gaya, Bihar)
  6. Marathwada University (Aurangabad, Maharashtra)
  7. Mumbai University (Mumbai, Maharashtra)
  8. Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla University (Raipur, Chattisgarh)
  9. Ranchi University (Ranchi, Jharkhand)
  10. Rani Durgavati University (Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh)
  11. Utkal University (Bhubaneshwar, Odisha)

These universities catered to the rural youth and this initiative brought about a change for the better in their lives by making them employable. Graduating students not only have a degree in their chosen stream, but also acquired a diploma in a job-oriented discipline. For example, a B.A. History student potentially acquired Diploma in Tourism. All students enrolled for NUSSD gain competency in motivation, digital literacy, English communication, legal literacy, youth leadership and peoples’ skill, financial literacy, introduction to entrepreneurship and working with communities.
