This is a long-term, international programme in partnership with Earthwatch, WaterAid and WWF and local project partners. The Water Programme began as a five-year programme running between 2012 and 2016, backed by USD100 million of support from HSBC. By the end of 2016 the partners had exceeded their original five-year targets, having:

  • Provided 1.6 million people with safe water and 2.5 million people with better sanitation.
  • Helped to protect 527,411 hectares of wetland and 1,826 kilometres of river.
  • Taught 170,995 people how to reduce the impact of farming and fishing on freshwater sources.
  • Trained more than 8,000 HSBC employees as Citizen Scientists so that they can test the quality of freshwater in their area.
  • Building on the achievements to date, HSBC has extended the programme for a further three years (2017 to 2019).

The Water Programme follows the success of the award-winning HSBC Climate Partnership, a five-year programme to reduce the impact of climate change on people, forests, freshwater and cities, and accelerate the adoption of low-carbon policies.
