Project Description

It is evident that the environment in which children grow up today is inconsistent and unstable, with constantly changing social and economic dynamics. This makes it challenging for children to thrive in today’s dynamic world. In the beginning of the year 2018, the Delhi Government had constituted a team of handpicked education consultants, teacher educators, and mentor teachers from the Delhi Government, NGOs and individuals to design the Happiness Curriculum. These 5 institutions were selected after deeply evaluating 1700 entries received from all across the globe. Blue Orb Foundation is a proud member of this 5 member team. This Curriculum will be implemented in all Government Schools across Delhi.

The objective of the curriculum is to help students lead happier lives, while making meaningful contributions to their communities by developing skills like empathy, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and collaboration among them. It also aims to support students become mindful and self-aware to deal with stressful & conflicting situations around them while building meaningful relationships. The Happiness Curriculum is also an endeavor to connect knowledge gained in these classes to life outside the school and to provide for overall development in children. The curriculum will be implemented through a bank of age-appropriate stories and activities that have been designed using interactive methodologies like storytelling, role-play, and guided practices for mindfulness, joyful team work activities, and reflection circles and so on. These stories and activities have been contextualized to the everyday experiences of students.

In their daily happiness period, the curriculum will enable students to reflect on the relationship between their feelings, thoughts, behavior and their impact on themselves, their family, and the natural environment. Every Happiness Period will begin with a few minutes of mindfulness practice, followed by a story or activity and reflective discussions. Each child will be given a chance to reflect and express their thoughts about the story or activity. The intended outcome is to enhance students’ level of awareness, concentration and deepen learning to lead a happier, meaningful life. The curriculum will be delivered in classrooms by school teachers, who will be provided with a Handbook containing the bank of basic activities, mindfulness activities and stories and the Happiness Curriculum Framework. The students will not be given textbooks or homework for their Happiness Period. The curriculum was launched by his holiness the Dalai Lama on the 2nd of July'2018.
