Project Description

The Katha Lab School provides high-quality education for under-privileged children in one of New Delhi’s largest slums. Established in 1990, the Katha Lab School is the heart of Katha’s education programmes, serving as a source of ideas and a test-bed for Katha’s innovations and publications.
Started in 1988 to enhance the joys of reading and the love of books, Katha started the Katha Lab School in the poverty-ridden slums of Govindpuri in 1990, where most children worked to support their families. Interacting deeply with children, their mothers, we asked: Why? What? How? Through experimentation and relentless learning we stabilized the integrated solution that has been replicated to create value for more than 100,000 disadvantaged children across Delhi.
The innovative Katha pedagogy is also being mainstreamed in government system through Public Private partnership. Katha is in Partnership with SDMC (South Delhi Municipal Corporation) under SQEP (School Quality Enhancement Project)
Deliverable/intervention: It offers high-quality education to children from birth to age 17 every year. As well as providing crèche, pre-school, primary, secondary and special needs education, the school offers IT and vocational training to full-time students as well as to young professionals and marginalised women from the local community.
Reach: 2000 children annually with formal education system and professional certifications.
Katha’s work supports the overarching Right To Education, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and National Curriculum Framework, 2005 goals that address quality, pedagogy, teacher education and capacity development for all children across social, economic divides to meet the UN sustainable goal
