Project Description

With increased employment opportunities for women, more and more are joining the workforce. The growing industrialization and urban development have caused increased migration into the cities. This results in increasing nuclear families making children vulnerable due to lack of support and protective environment of joint families. Since women go out of home for work, young children are susceptible to an insecure environment and their basic needs are neglected in the foundation years of development. These children are in need of daycare services providing quality care and protection.

Women involved informal sector can avail daycare facilities as the employers are obliged to provide the service under the legislation. However, women engaged in the informal sector are neglected as there are no such policies for these mothers. More children of such mothers are more susceptible to malnutrition and other health issues due to their socioeconomic backgrounds.

Through our Child-Friendly Spaces program, we aim to bridge this gap. Classes are specially designed to increase awareness among the informal worker communities of the importance of education for their children, while simultaneously highlighting the government’s need to reform the education system to accommodate these children. We intend to create a mutual consciousness so that in the end, we are not required and the government works to increase enrolment of these migratory children.

Saath has been running Child-Friendly Spaces classes for the child labourers since 2008 to provide full time, i.e. 9 am to 5 pm, crèche and informal education facility with health and nutrition support to them. As the need arose, classes for migrant construction workers’ children are also run. The aim is to create interest in education and reconnect these children back to formal education and pull them out of the cycle of labour work and provide a safe environment when parents are away for work. Saath has run the programme in Ahmedabad, Daman, Surat of Gujarat and Hyderabad of Telangana State. Till date over 7,843 children have passed through these classes and 450+ children have been enrolled back to formal schools.
