Project Description

Long Term Objective: To empower girls and young women, who are victims and survivors of early marriage to improve their access to rights, opportunities and services in Karnataka, India. Short term

Objectives:

  • The girls and young women, who are victims and survivors of early child marriage are organized as a strong and growing movement, driving the agenda for its members and playing an active and influential role.
  • The girls and young women are supported and empowered by their family, society and culture.
  • The Change Agents, who represent the target group (girls and young women) have confidence, knowledge and skills to facilitate access to rights, opportunities and services.
  • The Government agencies and other stakeholders (policy makers, law enforcing authorities, service providers) at local, state and national levels ensure that the target population have access to rights, opportunities and services.

Special Features of Project

  • Rights, welfare and development of Early Married Girls both victims (who are presently married and are below 18 years of age) and Survivors (who are married at under age but now are above 18 years of age).
  • A total of 3000 Early married Girls identified in 60 villages of Belagavi and Dharwad districts of Karnataka.
  • Impact of the Project:

  1. A total of 15,000 target girls and women are enrolled/ on-boarded in the movement of the Action to ascertain the rights of Early married Girls
  2. A total of 180 change agents (representatives of target girls and young women) capacities are built to self-advocate effectively and to shape the broader dialogue around their rights and access to services
  3. A total of 100 personnel from Government - education, health, women & child development, social welfare, law enforcement and judiciary sensitized on the representation and response to voice of these women in Karnataka
  4. Fifty Civil Society Organizations are sensitized and engaged in Movement building
  5. Government has officially agreed to respond to the challenges to address the issue of child marriage and the issues concerned to the early married girls.
