Project Description

The/Nudge Foundation’s flagship “program in life management” began in November 2015 with the support of Mr Nandan Nilekani and Mphasis, the first CSR partner of The/Nudge. The project called “The/Nudge Gurukul” is a 360-degree, 90-day, fully residential foundational skill development program aimed at job and more importantly, life-readiness of underprivileged youth in the age group of 18-25 yrs. The program is built with a strong emphasis on extensive experiential learning through habit-building and repetition and focuses on three main foundations:

  • Economic foundation - the job skill required to be gainfully employed
  • Learning foundation - basics of numeracy, workplace communication and digital literacy skills required in day-to-day job
  • Life foundation - basic skills required to continue and grow in the job. It includes financial literacy, personality development, career, and health management

The youth are currently offered 7 job skills to choose from. These include driving, plumbing, electrical works, domestic BPO, retail sales, delivery partners and beauticians. The choice of the job skill is a carefully curated function of youth aspiration, market absorption, growth prospects/potential for upward mobility, trainability in 3 months, scalability, high job density etc. The 90-day program ends with a graduation ceremony that celebrates the placements of the youth in jobs through an open campus placement model (over 150 employers are now part of the ecosystem including HGS, Sobha Developers, Bharat Matrimony, Swiggy, Starbucks etc). Post Gurukul, the alumni are continuously supported through the life/guard program that focuses on housing solutions, ongoing career counselling and increased savings to keep the youth out of poverty. For example, regression analysis of 18 successive batches totalling to ~700 students, points to a 2% increase in retention in jobs for every INR 100 saved because of housing solutions.

Over the last 3 years, more than ~3200 youth from 7 different states have already been trained (predominantly in Bangalore) on this model with 100% placements and 74% engagement on the life/guard platform.

Special Features of the Project

Modular content and experiential learning contextualized for student cohorts with varying learning baselines.
Teacher training product “Slate”in place to certify teachers on an online graded certification product built on Moodle.
Week-1 life camp that allows for upfront attrition and thereby allows for better predictability (at scale) and quality of trained students.
Behavioural and mind-set change achieved through controlled living and learning environment and processes (e.g. student-run Gurukul, Karma Points). Karma points, for example, is a currency given to students and rewards positive behaviour with extra points and penalizes non appreciable behaviour by deduction
High focus on experiential learning (e.g. 2X your money via entrepreneurship, live digital projects, 24-hr learn-a-thons, gamified livelihood training, English Coach Factory - English product built to focus on shedding inhibition as a precursor to speaking proficiency.
Life/Guard that provides life-long support to help the beneficiaries navigate routine life shocks (career, health, housing, finance) and stay out of poverty sustainably. It is a combination of human and cloud telephony leveraged support system for alumni (and potentially for all migrants) with a toll-free 24*7 helpline that generates and resolves tickets in a timely manner.
Lower cost per hour of learning with better placements and retention in jobs through life/guard
