In response to the debilitating socio-economic conditions arising from the COVID pandemic, SAWF IN launched the Economic and Environmental Justice (EEJ) Fellowships to support early-stage women and transwomen change agents/leaders working to improve the economic status of the women in their communities while adopting ecologically responsive strategies of income generation. The objective of the fellowship is to support initiatives for building economic resilience in a manner that is also ecologically sustainable. In other words, the fellowship seeks to nurture practices and actions that will achieve economic justice outcomes using environmentally sound strategies. A brief outline of the interventions of fellows in the current fellowship cohort is given below:
Through the fellowship, the fellows have directly impacted the lives of 230 women and trans persons in their communities. Additionally, the fellows and their cohorts have reached out to 5000 community members to spread awareness about their initiative, its links to addressing environmental sustainability in their areas, and the economic and social gains their enterprise has, for the community. They have done this through community meetings, federation meetings, participation in conventions, exhibitions, events, social media, etc.
