Project Description

In response to the debilitating socio-economic conditions arising from the COVID pandemic, SAWF IN launched the Economic and Environmental Justice (EEJ) Fellowships to support early-stage women and transwomen change agents/leaders working to improve the economic status of the women in their communities while adopting ecologically responsive strategies of income generation. The objective of the fellowship is to support initiatives for building economic resilience in a manner that is also ecologically sustainable. In other words, the fellowship seeks to nurture practices and actions that will achieve economic justice outcomes using environmentally sound strategies. A brief outline of the interventions of fellows in the current fellowship cohort is given below:

  • Bujji Pallepogu, Andhra Pradesh – Is developing a self-sustainable, ecological-economic model based on waste segregation and vermicompost production in villages of Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Raina Roy, West Bengal – Is capacitating a collective of trans waste collectors to learn safer waste segregation and natural farming practices in Dhapa, a garbage dumping ground in Kolkata city.
  • Kirti Vartha, Maharashtra – Is promoting social and economic leadership among women from the Warli tribe by reviving women-led, traditional livelihood practices in Palghar and Dahanu blocks in the Palghar district of Maharashtra.
  • Rehena Molla, West Bengal – Is supporting the adoption of organic farming and animal rearing practices by women’s collectives in villages of Joynagar district in the Sundarbans region.

Through the fellowship, the fellows have directly impacted the lives of 230 women and trans persons in their communities. Additionally, the fellows and their cohorts have reached out to 5000 community members to spread awareness about their initiative, its links to addressing environmental sustainability in their areas, and the economic and social gains their enterprise has, for the community. They have done this through community meetings, federation meetings, participation in conventions, exhibitions, events, social media, etc.

Special Features of Project

  • The Economic and Environmental Justice (EEJ) Fellowship managed by SAWF IN supports interventions led by women and trans persons from marginalised groups such as Dalits, Adivasis, religious minorities, and other indigenous communities working on building economic resilience and justice but in a manner that is also ecologically sustainable
  • The program focuses on initiatives that are developing economic revival by incorporating communities and individuals facing livelihood loss and strengthening their access and control over economic resources. These interventions are a way of providing sustainable livelihood options to the communities and also increasing economic participation of women.
  • The initiatives enhance environmental justice by strengthening the lens of ecological sustainability of the interventions, including in situations of displacement and forced migration.
