Project Description

The mMitra project is based on mobile technology. India has over 1 billion mobile phone subscribers. Almost 63.5% of households have mobiles in the slums of India. Project mMitra leverages this unique opportunity of using mobile technology to reach out to pregnant women and mothers of infants with relevant information. The information is appropriately timed to the stage of pregnancy or age of child and targeted to influence adoption of the health seeking behaviour among pregnant women and mothers of infants. With the increased penetration of mobile technology, the project has a capability to reach out to the masses even internationally simply through a voice message.

mMitra is “the revolution in technology which is a great opportunity to create, design and implement sustainable interventions to reduce maternal, neonatal and child mortality and morbidity in underprivileged urban and rural communities in India.”

They objective is to address three key areas namely, maternal, neonatal and child mortality and morbidity. It reaches out to the poorest of the poor women with reference to the specific delays that prevent pregnant women from getting the care they need and thereby endangering their own as well as the child’s lives. Based on their understanding of this model in the particular context of maternal and child health, ARMMAN uses their ToC to design and implement sustained solutions.

The project provides pregnant women and mothers of infants with timed and targeted health-related information, equipping them to take informed decisions for themselves and their family’s health, which in turn reduces maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. It is provided free of cost to every woman attending the antenatal OPD and PNC ward of Sion Hospital in Mumbai, and Ghati hospital Aurangabad, Maharashtra- India. Project mMitra has improved the interaction between women and the health care system as a result of which women are having safer and more informed pregnancy and the children are born healthier.

Twenty three year old Supriya who was expecting her first child and was anxious as her family did not have any educated members. On one of her visits to the hospital, she filled the mMitra form. Soon she started receiving pregnancy related information on her phone and her anxiety related to pregnancy slowly started to fade away. She said that she felt like mMitra was a wise old family member, who guided her with useful tips and Do’s & Don’ts during her pregnancy. Thanks to mMitra, she became aware of the importance of nutritional supplements during pregnancy, which helped her and her baby stay healthy.
