With the larger goal of ensuring sustainable use of environmental resources and also to provide additional income to farmers, foundation lays emphasis on promotion of large-scale replenishable plantations. The idea is to plant fast-growing species of trees on degraded hill slopes in an effort to regenerate the land. In a short period of time, the plants will grow into trees which farmers may harvest and sell as hard wood to industries – therefore this will enable farmers to earn an additional income alongside agriculture as well as address problems of soil erosion, land degradation etc.
The plantation initiative has set up a nursery and clonal propagation center in Tizit with an aim to introduce genetically superior planting material. Free saplings are being distributed to local farmers who would then become owners of the particular tree. Currently in Tizit, Mon District, Nagaland sapling development and distribution is underway. The plantation initiative has so far covered nearly 1200 acres of land in Tizit area.
